Perfect stop for lunch bite on a wet and blustery day. Good quality food judging by our own and what we saw on plates going past.
Service was excellent and personable. Good selection of teas available tongo with an afternoon tea if thats your thing. A few nice little touches such as warmed bread rolls served with soup, crockery was warmed as well, the butter was spreadable (a rare treat these days of straight from the fridge). Unusual perhaps for this type of establishment it was dog friendly.
These was a good selection of cakes and tray bakes, my only critique would be a disproportionate quantity of gluten/vegan/egg free baking vs normal choices.
Lovely friendly staff welcomed us in. A good idea to book a table if you are planning to go around peak times (lunch) as there’s not a huge amount of tables. I needed a gluten free option and they were very accommodating it was fabulous that there were so many cakes from the display counter to choose. So tempting I wanted most of them. I need to return to try more. Had the afternoon tea, there’s different types (and prices) we had the one with sandwiches, cake and 2 scones along with jam and cream served with a pot of tea or a coffee. (need to give them advance notice for the other gluten free afternoon tea choice that is more substantial) but what we had was more than adequate-delicious food, perhaps could have done with more of the sandwiches and perhaps one less scone - but that’s my personal choice.
Just popped in on way back from Yorkshire for a bite to eat, was intending to have soup but opted for the Halloumi salad instead, it was absolutely delicious! Hubby has soup and cheese scone also delicious. Very friendly staff.
Wonderful savouries, astonishingly great cakes - all with excellent service! Lovely food, lovely people.
Hadn't booked and so really pleased they could accommodate my daughter and I as we fancied cake and a cuppa. We were made to feel very welcome and ordered a piece of dairy-free chocolate cake and a piece of curd tart. Both were gorgeous, fresh and tasty. Just had to be a great place as we learned that the lady who served us was from Doncaster, our home town. Thank you. We are so glad we chose Duncan's for our treat.
Now, a Sunday lunch is a Sunday lunch, right?
This lunchtime we travelled to Richmond, North Yorkshire, to a tea room we had enjoyed for a few weeks. It is a homely, well organised tea room, where the emphasis is on comfort and home from home kindness. You are treated as if you are the only one who matters - and this is applied to all who came to enjoy the delights Duncan's offers. How rare is this ??!!
We had booked for Sunday lunch and upon given a choice of two tables ( we had previously asked for a window view), and sat. Without rush, we were given the menus, and given ample time to select from the interesting starters, and an imaginative main course. It is NOT a licensed establishment, but we are allowed to bring our own wine - apparently. We were offered a carafe of iced water, which was readily accepted - (No charge !!)
My starter was a black pudding baked in a mustard seed sauce with crispy bacon pieces and toast. The is was excellent - although I would suggest that the toast was unnecessary. Having said this, it was something I had not experienced before and am delighted to say, it was very much something I would wish to have again. My colleague had Yorkshire puddings and gravy as a starter - cooked just right and they hadn't been left hanging around and dried out, as some we have experienced. So far so good!
The main course came, I had just one slice of beef( thickly cut) as I am not a great lover of meat, though I do enjoy what I have, although I could have had more if I wanted. My colleague asked for the potato and leek pie, which was served in a teacup ! Wow, now that is different!! Within a few seconds of it appearing on the table, Karen appeared with a serving spoon and removed the pie lid, which was short crust pastry which gains extra brownie points, serving out the contents which was in a creamy cheese sauce. Now came the vegetables - roast potatoes,Creamed potatoes, broccoli, carrots and........Spring Greens!!! Which were cooked to perfection. Most places we have been have a tendency to over cook greens and they look as if they are wilted beyond recognition. " Been kept under the bed for a few nights", is a favourite description of ours. The other vegetables were well cooked in that they were crisp, but cooked - Perfect!
The puddings were chosen from a board on the wall, and I plumped for Blackberry and Apple pie, while my colleague chose the baked egg custard. Both were delicious, and we rounded off the meal with coffee. How nice it is to coffee that tastes like coffee and not dish water !!!!!
This is a wonderful place, where you can have as little or as much as you want, and more if required. This is one place for Sunday lunch we will be coming back to.
Wonderful find with lots of gluten free options. Fabulous breakfast and attentive staff who were very friendly and chatty. Could have had more toast with the breakfast if we wanted but were stuffed. Definitely recommend!
We got the last table at this lovely tea room and were shown to it by the most friendly lady .We only had coffee & cakes but they were delicious . Well worth a visit if you’re in Richmond town centre !
Sooooo good! The second time we’ve been when visiting Richmond. Lovely, wholesome food, reasonably priced. Arrived and it was heaving and the lovely lady took our number and called when there was space.
We all had great food, the lady who served was so lovely and helpful. The half half dessert was a great suggestion ;0) NOM! Thanks to all the staff who made the visit so great. Great location, great food. Hope to see you for a third visit. Particular thanks to Karen! All the best from bristol
Quality full English breakfast & great service in very cosy surroundings. Would have gone again but surprisingly doesn't open until 10am and we were leaving earlier the following day.
Went to Duncan's for breakfast this morning. We all enjoyed a very tasty "full English" cooked to perfection and served by very happy friendly staff. Excellent service will be back soon.
We were going for a work meal out and this place looked like it fitted the bill and we weren't disappointed - it was amazing!
As a vegetarian coeliac my options are often pretty limited but not here!
There were loads of things on the menu that I could have and the most amazing selection of puddings!
It's safe to say this will not be my last visit there :)
Nothing but a door onto the street leading to flight of stairs, to tell you what a gem of a place this is. Friendly obliging staff , who stop at nothing to accommodate your food requirements. Very rarely does my husband give a tip. But on this occasion the rightly deserved it.
Duncan's is my wife's favourite tearoom in Richmond, this was my first visit. Brilliant staff, so helpful and friendly, service was exemplary, food equally so, liked it so much booked for Christmas Eve, with our son and daughter in law.
Good menu variety that you need to try for yourself:)
Visited here a few weeks ago with my partner and was treated to a lush breakfast. Worth every penny and made with locally sourced products. Would highly recommend.
The customer service was excellent and they could not do enough for you. Will definitely return.
We live in Richmond for a few years, no doubt this restaurant is our favorite, we love everything, it's so good and above all everything is good
Was in the area and wanted a rest and my wife pointed out the first floor restaurant. I quickly googled TA and saw the five stars without reading further,
What a find.
We just wanted coffee and cake and as soon as we walked up the stairs and through the door the selection of home made cakes made me drool. It was hard to decide.
I ended up choosing the Bakewell tart with mince meat ( soaked in brandy or some alcohol) which would have been good enough but the waitress asked if I wanted cream, ice cream of custard. The addition of custard made it to die for !
My wife had treacle tart with cream which was just as good,
Staff were unbelievably nice, helpful and attenfive.
If I lived nearer I would be as fat as a pig - all the food on other tables looked brilliant.
A spontaneous stop off in Richmond found us looking for a Sunday lunch. This place looks unpromising from outside but the offer of cheese soufflé was enough to get us up the stairs...
As you open the door the dessert selection hits you in the face like an assault from the Sugar Plum Fairy. OK. We needed to readjust and go for lighter mains to leave room for puddings.
So, we had cauliflower cheese on toast with a light mustard cheese sauce served on a bed of salad: quiche and onion quiche and salad: mincemeat bakewell with custard: and a dilemma. I couldn't choose between the berry frangipane and lemon meringue pie, so Karen, one of our two amazing waitresses, gave me half of each. "Ooops", she said, as she delivered two huge "half" portions of the most delicious desserts I have had all year (and I am writing this in November), "I accidently gave you a bit extra". Luckily Karen is the owner too, so can't get in trouble for this!
Washed down with a huge pot of strong Yorkshire Tea and some of the friendliest service we have encountered anywhere, this was a stunning lunch. Duncans is well deserving of some of the best feedback we have ever seen on this site.
Don't do what we did and stumble here. Make a meal in this cafe the focus of a day out in a fascinating town.
Karen and her lovely, friendly team serve fabulous food, in spotlessly clean surroundings. Nothing is too much trouble. Their afternoon tea is spectacular and will leave you full to busting! Not surprisingly, they have a lot of regulars ... including us!
Absolutely lovely experience, the food is home cooked and delicious and the customer service was first class. Plenty of choice, I struggled to drag my husband out. We were made to feel very welcome and the staff were genuinely friendly. We live on the doorstep and will be visiting more frequently as my husband does have a lot of cake to try. Well worth a visit.
