A fascinating insight into the early Steel industry. Being fully operational and maintained when it runs you can see the belts and gears all working like they used to. Bear in mind there were once dozens of this type of wheel in operation along the river valleys of Sheffield!

Interesting history and make sure to ask as many questions, the gentlemen who assisted us were very knowledgeable about the history of Mr Shepherd's Wheel

Friendly, knowledgeable volunteer (?) was very patient and more than happy to answer my dumb questions. Good wheel. Nice way to break up a pleasant walk.

A fabulous visit that brings to life Sheffield's industrial past. This was a dangerous and dirty job, with the grinders having a life expectancy of only 26 years. That the water wheel still works and all the machinery continues to turn beings the place to life. Well worth a visit. If this.review is useful please hit like

This is a lovely place to visit, especially as it is free. A nice part of Sheffields heritage ehi h is being preserved. I took my little ones and they loved seeing the wbeel spinning and the grindstones turning.

Nice little place to visit with a very pleasant informative lady on hand to answer questions. Bit of a mystery to find to start with the car but if you park on Westwood way then you can walk through the gate and by the side of the river straight to it.

Situated on Porter Brook in Whitely Woods, Shepherd Wheel is a historic watermill and part of the Sheffield heritage museums. Open and active only on weekends and Bank Holidays, the old building courtyard and wheel is fenced off from the path.
