Very friendly. Food simple but good. Definitely could not be described as expensive! Good range of beers, samples provided for the uninitiated. Probably could do with an injection of capital, but something of a triumph to have survived at all over the last 15 months so that's an observation not a criticism and I'm sure the landlord agrees. In my view, the best sort of country pub, unpretentious and obliging. I wish them well and will definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️ Update - doing a nice gentle walk on New Year's Day through the Dodington Estate to the Majors Retreat we have heard the tragic news that the pub is being sold and that we were drinking some of the last pints. All the best to the lovely staff and here is hoping that the building is sold on as a pub. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 A lovely friendly pub. Regularly pop in for a few beers and lunch whilst out for a walk on the Cotswolds Way. Great selection of beers (with the locals giving advice on which was best) and the food was good. Has the feel of a pub that you would want to be your local.

Very tasty food. Atmosphere very welcoming. I've rung at the last minute and they have always accommodated us. Sunday roast very tasty. Always come away feeling satisfied. It's nice going here as it's more like seeing friends than the impersonal chain pubs that have absolutely no character. A gem.

A friendly place with a friendly landlord and reasonably priced food. We were a small group of former work colleagues meeting for drinks and food after work. The place is cosy, service fast. Good choice of local and less local beer and cider. Huge portion of food, go there with an empty stomach 😃 Music is not loud so is not disturbing the conversation. The fireplace is a great feature especially when the fire is burning. I hope they manage to stay in the business without bringing in TVs and loud music.

Stopped here while walking the Cotswolds Way. We looked like a pair of drowned rats but we're welcomed. I quess they have a lot of walkers stop there. A charming old pub full of character. We didn't have any food but I was surprised with the choices on offer. Definitely a good stopping off point while walking or just passing.

Four of us had lovely meals after being greeted by the very friendly Landlord, this pub isn't one of your modern pubs it's old and comfy with character and also it looks as if it may have a huge fire in the winter. I had Cajun chicken which was good but 2 of us had steak and Stilton pie which I think was on the specials board, my Husband said "it was the best pie ever ". We also had big portions for a reasonable price Good beers as well.

We stopped here for a late supper as we had been touring the area all day and staying at the nearby Best Western. The food was great (and reasonably priced) but what really made this place stand out was the atmosphere. It was exactly what I had pictured of an English Pub (my family and I were visiting from Canada). It's rustic charm from the outside in the quiet little village of Tormarton is what initially drew us in. That and there isn't much else around. The bartender (owner?), Roy made us feel very welcome and was quite helpful with his suggestions regarding the menu. We had planned to just eat and head back to the hotel for some sleep as we were heading off for Paris the next day. But we got talking with Roy. He shared with us a lot of history of the area and intriguing stories about his pub. We ended up staying for a couple more hours enjoying drinks and playing darts. If I'm ever in this region again, I would make a point of stopping in to eat and say hi. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Roy remembered us. He is very much a people person and is the heart and soul of this pub!

We use the Major’s Retreat regularly, why ? because the food is great and the Landlord, Roy, is the friendliest nutter you will ever meet. If you enjoy a pint of real ale most are local and well kept. The Pig’s Ear is recommended, but dont have too many and definitely don’t drive afterwards. The staff are as friendly as the landlord, but maybe not as mad ?.... Some of the best pub food you will ever find.

I would like to say a big "thank you!" to the Landlord and Landlady and their staff for making us feel so welcome last Saturday lunch time. Our birthday celebration was made special by the extra attention to detail. The food was lovely and the beer went down a treat. Recommended.
