Good coffee, good tea, good pastries, and good sandwiches is what you'll find at the 1690 House. This is a quaint, comfortable shop. It's a good place to nibble, relax, and reflect in the give-and-take library while you catch up on your reading.
Handicap parking is well placed. You may find the gravel lot challenging for a wheel chair.
My only complaint is the staff. They are cold and aloof. They properly fill the orders, but project an attitude of being bothered. More smiles and a thank you for your patronage would complete the 1690 House package.

This place was simply fabulous. A touch expensive, but actually worth the price. The pastry chef is simply a wizard. We had the almond peach tart, summer berry tart and affogato as well as a peanut butter cookie and a molasses Ginger cookie. The shortcrust on the tart was pure heaven and everything was well balanced and not overly sweet. It was best because we could eat it in the screen porch in the back yard or the Adirondack chairs in the front garden which is exactly where a tea time snack should be had. If you don't stop here, you are seriously missing out. Also one of our cookies was gluten free and I could not have told you which one.

Quality takes time, but not too much here. Best sandwich of any kind I've ever had. Are semi-sweet chocolate torte with raspberry has spoiled me for any other kind of sweets.
Update: Just can't get enough of the 1690! Getting my favorite today, roast beef!

Loved this little coffee shop! The food, coffee and service was wonderful. During the off season they are only open on certain days... I had waited a few days to experience this place and it did not disappoint!!! So many foodie options! Try this place!!!

So glad we stayed in town through this morning.
This shop is super cute and idyllic of a small town NE breakfast joint (at least, from a Midwest perspective).
The decor is great, service is top notch and the food both looked and tasted even better than expected.
Don't be fooled -- their breakfast sandwiches will fill up most people.
If you're in or around Wells, make sure you stop in! We definitely will the next time we're up here.

Don't miss this gem! There isn't a better breakfast sandwich on this planet.
So glad Congdon's was busy. Drove down the street based on Google's recommendations and as usual, Google got it so right!

I was truly blown away by the gluten free desserts here. Hands down the best I’ve EVER had. I just recently moved here from Portland, OR and we have a few nationally renowned gluten free bakeries and they don’t even compare. The raspberry almond muffin was full of fresh raspberries and almonds, it was light, the texture was perfect and it wasn’t overly sweet. The blueberry muffin was equally delicious. The peanut butter cookie, that one could get me in a lot of trouble, I could’ve eaten a dozen. Salty, peanut buttery goodness; again the texture was spot on. I honestly couldn’t tell any of it was gluten free, (no hives so I knew I was in fact in gluten free heaven). I also purchased the mini carrot cakes for my family (the actual reason why I came) and they all loved it! I made it just in time before they closed and the gentleman who helped me gave me two more of the gluten free muffins! So kind, so unexpected. Pricing was cheaper than I expected, especially when you consider the quality of the items.

This place is a great breakfast and brunch spot as like a quick service. Both of our sandwiches were delicious and our coffee was so good! They should have a line out the door. We were there on a Thursday, so maybe it’s busier on the weekends. Their sign is really small though and there’s a tree that partially blocks it. The building looks like an old house, so as many times as we passed it during our 3 week stay, we only knew it was there because of a google search for breakfast near us.
