We sampled the 7 course taster menu, it was three hours or so of sheer perfection ! The food was sublime, out of this world, service so attentive and nothing too much trouble.
Sat on the terrace for pre dinner drinks, such a peaceful and tranquil setting. I can't recommend the Whitebrook highly enough and will definitely be making a return visit.
One evening of wonderful and perfect memories created.
This is a high quality experience. The building doesn't look fantastic from the outside and isn't easy to find. Once you step inside it's non stop quality, attention to detail and friendly, sincere service. Our room was beautiful but needs a full length mirror, (for the ladies) and a stronger light over the bathroom mirror (for the ladies make up), minor points. We chose the taster menu. The food was fantastic. Well planned and superbly presented. Flavours and cooking was high class. All the staff are friendly and well informed on all items. We didn't have the wine option but the organic local Pinot Noir was beautiful. Breakfast was another wonderful experience and perfectly complimented the evening menu. We'll definitely return and wish the whole team a successful future, well done all.
Henry Ashby has been a forager for over 50 years, first in his native Yorkshire, later the Scilly Isles and more recently in Monmouthshire. In his own words, he's not a "survivalist" or a "bush crafter" or any such ridiculous macho caricature, he looks only for the very finest wild plants, herbs and funghi and sells them on to only the very finest local restaurants. More specifically, recently he has begun supplying exclusively to the Whitebrook, a Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms in the Wye Valley, whose menus are a hymn to the local estuaries and ancient woodland and changing seasons.
No word of a lie, I haven’t heard of half the ingredients on the menu at The Crown at Whitebrook. Mugwort, meadowsweet, mallow cream, pickled pine berries, lesser celandine, scurvy grass, unicorn fart and fawn hoof are just a few examples. Ok, I’m kidding on the last two but the others all feature on a menu of unusual and foraged ingredients which have recently earned Chef-Patron Chris Harrod a Michelin Star. As a result, one of Wales’ most famous and celebrated restaurants is back where it belongs, a mere twelve months after reopening following closure due to the financial difficulties caused by a prolonged period of bad weather. Whilst the unfamiliar ingredients on the menu make for unique tastes and textures, there’s something reassuringly familiar and comforting about Harrod’s food. It’s probably down to his classical French cooking technique picked up during time spent at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. A pair of amuse-bouches were a serious statement of intent to kick
We are not, as you will have guessed from the above picture, in zone 1. Already on a journey west, extending the trip by a day or two to further our journey seemed a good idea so with that in mind, I headed over the border and in to Wales with a view to finding great Welsh food, something that has till now seemed somewhat elusive. My first port of call is The Crown at Whitebrook, near Monmouth, which suited my need for accommodation also. I know little of the Crown beforehand but clicking on to the website to get the address, a picture of the Head Chef James Sommerin is on screen and I recognise him from Great British Menu but still have no real clue what to expect. Fortunately, Whitebrook comes up on the SatNav since there's no street name and 'near Monmouth', the second line of their address covers quite a bit of ground. Knowing I'm on the right road when I reach Whitebrook prompts relief, and after that, it's not hard to find. An unassuming place, it has that old country pub look to
Absolutely delicious meal for our anniversary. It was a huge treat for us given the cost but we thoroughly enjoyed the 7 course meal. The tastes and flavours, and all from locally sources ingredients, we're phenomenal. We have a 7.30 table at were the only guests for a good half an hour which was a little uncomfortable (lacking atmosphere) so I'd recommend a slightly later table but I would definitely recommend. It a stunning venue with a wonderful team and the food... Wow.
I didn't stay but stopped here when I was lost. The staff were friendly and so kind and helpful. The facilities looked lovely and I will definitely remember this place for future trips. So quiet and comfortable.
Couldn't praise this restaurant enough! The staff there went above and beyond even to the point where one of the gentleman must of overheard me asking my wife about one of the ingredients and took his time to explain in detail what it is ,was honestly the best dining experience we have ever had ! considering it's Michelin star it's surprisingly un pretentious with hearty food .
Had an amazing stay for my husbands birthday. We have been a number of times over the last 6 years, and it never disappoints. Spectacular food, service, and in the most beautiful setting. A truly wonderful weekend
Fabulous and distinctive restaurant (with rooms) in a hidden nook in the Wye Valley. The stupendous cuisine is the real reason to visit
We had a great stay here. The evening tasting menu was very interesting, unique courses using local produce. The wine matching worked very well. The rooms are comfortable if not overly large. Breakfast was outstanding and the service throughout was very good.
The Whitebook is a fabulous restaurant. We had the five course tasting menu at lunchtime on Sunday. Our children had a delicious three course menu. The whole experience was enjoyable, but the Wye Valley asparagus and Hogget dishes were exceptional.
The whole experience surpassed our expectations. We fully enjoyed it. The evening tasting menu excelled. The words on the menu did not do justice to the experience. The 5 people who variously served us took great trouble to explain the dish, discuss and answer questions. The room was really comfortable and we'll furnished. The window seat was welcoming, but for shorter people a compact chair would help. (The bed was high too). The breakfast tasting menu was another delight. We left sated.
We discovered the Whitebrook over 10 years ago, and were delighted to learn soon afterwards, that it was awarded a well-deserved Michelin star. It's difficult to improve on excellence but Chris Harrod and his team manage to get better with each visit. Our most recent stay this month was the pinnacle. A truly sublime dinner (and a tasting breakfast, too!) with the perfect blend of exquisite flavours and presentation, the most perfect wine served as part of the wine pairing and outstanding service. All that we could dream of, and more. Thank you!
This place really surpassed all my expectations. From the road it doesn’t look like anything special, but inside it’s a different story. The service, ambiance & food are simply amazing! I loved hearing how local the food was & the menu was just wow! Such a fun evening doing the tasting menu, highly recommend to anyone.
