Hotel Du Vin & Bistro

My husband and I had lunch at HDV Winchester on Monday 15/01/18. This was not our first visit, we have dined here on several previous occasions and have always been happy to return. This visit was no exception! Unusually we were actually the only diners booked in for lunch at the time we were there so Ali the waiter was exceptionally attentive and engaging throughout our 3 courses, which we appreciated. We arrived early so we could enjoy an aperitif in the bar and were greeted by a superbly attentive, friendly and knowledgeable barman (apologies, didn’t get his name) who helped me make a decision on what to have by going through all of the different gins and recommending appropriate mixers. I eventually went for an apple gin which was gorgeous! He gave us our lunch menus then after we’d finished our drinks, we were shown to our table. My baked salted beetroot starter was tasty although it looked a little lost in presentation; we shared a Chateaubriand fillet for our main which was absolutely mouth wateringly good, then I finished with apple tarte tatin; hubby had calamari and courgette flower in tempura to start and finished with pear and chocolate pudding which looked and tasted gorgeous, all warm and gooey inside! Wish I’d ordered that! Ali brought us both a much appreciated complimentary glass of Sauternes dessert wine which was delicious and the first time I’ve had a dessert wine (always avoided them as the thought of a sweet wine made me grimace but it was divine!). Overall our visit yesterday was superb, as usual. Thanks to all the staff.

My husband and I stayed for one night only but it was a superb visit. We arrived earlier than expected; nothing was too much trouble, we were able to park in the car park so we could explore Winchester by foot, before booking in later. Room was lovely, even better as we got a free upgrade! We were meeting family and friends for a meal out so didn't dine at the hotel this time but breakfast was good the next morning. Friendly, helpful staff, very comfortable room in a lovely setting made for a special visit. I would recommend and would love to return. Feeling happy after my little break. Thank you!
