Just around the corner from the Minster, this was a fun stop. Place was nearly full and had a great vibe. Plenty of cask ales served by younger staff who kept the place topped up. Interior is properly rustic yet modern and comfortable. Would absolutely return.

I Stumbled across the Eagle and Child while walking around near York Minister
It's run by The Leeds brewery and they had a couple of their cask beers plus a couple of guest beers available. They also had a range of keg beers too.
The pub also did food but I didn't try the food but what I saw being served looked good. The staff were very friendly as well.
But, please! No more Phil Collins. I was ready to drink a whole bottle of York Gin to get over the pain 😂.

Decent quality, freshly prepared, local food. Refreshing to find good vegetables served with tasty local meat; ubiquitous - but better than average - chips available if you have a hankering. Interesting range of non-chain-pub real ales available, and well kept.

Excellent pub, we unwittingly ordered 2 steaks meals and a bottle of white wine without realising it was on a promotion deal...nice surprise when we received the final bill. We loved the cheese board and I loved the Leeds Leodis beer.
Staff were excellent and a great friendly atmosphere.

We visited as a couple and a dog for a Sunday roast dinner on 17/09/23 and we were all made to feel very welcome.
The building was a nice and old little maze of nooks and crannies.
We ordered a roast beef dinner and a roast pork dinner with a side of sausages in bacon and they were all perfect and the portion size was spot on.
The only slight let down was the size of the dessert not quite living up to the menu description / price, I know that desserts rarely do, but couldn’t resist trying a Black Forest arctic roll.
We’d definitely visit again for a meal but would get an ice cream from outside the minster next time.

Very nice experience. We had Easter lunch with a tasty Sunday roast. They provided us a comfortable spot where it was easy to reach the accessible toilet and have the baby changed. They also provided us with highchair. Also, the position of the pub is a few steps from the stunning York Minster. Highly reccommended!

Great pub . Friendly staff. Really enjoyed our meal and drinks.

Lovely pub, and food drinks and service were excellent. My first 2 choices were already off the menu so initially I was a bit disappointed but as soon as the pork tenderloin arrived all was well, it was delicious and no regrets! Chicken was also extremely good. Also very helpful comms re dietary requirements. Atmosphere was great too - having a drink in the front room and upstairs looked really nice. We were in the back which was fine but a little bit tucked away if you want a bit more buzz. The only slight negative point is it could do with a freshen up in places. New carpet in the back, bit of a scrub and decorating here and there would make it even better.

(This review is a bit late - our visit was 2nd March. Also posted review on Trip Advisor).
I cannot rate this venue highly enough. We hired out the top floor for my boyfriend's birthday party. It was reasonably priced, & a great space, with a private bar included.
The staff were so easy to deal with from the first email inquiry to on the day.
We had sandwiches & chips which were lovely & brought our own cakes (which they found some candles for last minute as I'd forgotten them).
Easiest 5 stars ever!!

Visited October 2023: it’s not wheelchair accessible but my mum and two members of the public got my wheelchair up the steps and through the door. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet which is locked and uses radar keys which staff have if you’ve forgot yours or don’t have one. It’s a pretty little pub with an upstairs area too which I never saw. We didn’t eat here, just had several drinks. It’s dog friendly as I saw several pooches. There wasn’t ever a queue at the bar either and it wasn’t overcrowded despite us visiting on a Saturday PM

Love this place. Always good selection of ales on & staff are always very helpful & friendly.
My only criticism is that the lighting is a bit harsh & the decor doesn't seem to have the warmth of it's sister pub, The Duke of York, but don't let that put you off - it's a cracking pub and one of only a few in York I'd wholeheartedly recommend! :-)

Nice beer, friendly and helpful staff but it was more than £10 for a pint and a glass of wine, also the place stank of open drains, and did on a previous visit (not sure what's going on there it never smelled like that when it was a restaurant previously), but it is near our bus stop.

Just got home from the Eagle and Child after celebrating my younger daughter's 40th birthday. We were a group of 15 family members. We had the whole of the Drawing Room to ourselves, just the right size for our group. Great customer care, very warm welcome, venue was perfect and the food was delicious. Couldn't fault anything. A particular big thank you to Jo. Would strongly recommend. Oh and I've heard the beer is pretty top notch too.

Delicious Sunday roast and friendly and attentive staff. The front room upstairs is light and airy with a great view across the rooftops to the cathedral. Thank you!

Won a voucher for steak n bottle of wine for two. Amazing steak cooked perfectly will definitely return and it's worth the £30

Great food and drink and the Thursday steak nights with inclusive wine deal and jazz are great fun.

Best pub I've been to in a while. The staff are great too.

Really nice food and good range of beers and other drinks. Good atmosphere and the staff are great. Dog friendly on the ground floor. We are local and keep coming back so they must have got things right. Lovely location literally a stone's throw from the Minster. Not sure about the awful garish bright lights in the "yarden" but there are plenty of other cosy corners inside.

Love this dog friendly place. Lovely food and very helpful, pleasant staff. The atmosphere was great, stunning old building. A trip to the loo gives great views of the Minster.

Visited on Wednesday. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Washed down with a nice pint of Gamma Ray. Good selection of beers at decent prices.

I had an exchange of emails prior to our visit re my dietary requirements (Slimming World) and Toni was very helpful.
On arrival we were served by a very pleasant, equally helpful, young woman. She logged all my queries and checked with the kitchen staff that they could comply. The meal was just what I wanted (grilled steak, boiled new potatoes, side salad), perfectly cooked and delicious. My husband had fish and chips which were also well cooked.
I'd really recommend a visit.

I enjoyed my steak! I am not given 5 because my husband ordered Tuna Nicoise advertised on the menu and unfortunately the waitress said that the Cheff couldn't make it, he finished ordering an Avocado and Chicken salad that was average. It was a nice warm evening to enjoy the open area unfortunately every ashtray in every table was fulled and you can smell it when you are eating.

Popped in for a beer with my other half the other day, the beer was cloudy with a chemical after taste. When I went to take it back I was told that that was how it should be!The barman was not happy about changing it and quite rude, fortunately the barmaid agreed with me and swapped it for another pint which was fine but suffice to say due to the poor service we won't be going back!

Excellent pint, friendly staff and family friendly - loads of board games available too. I like this pub more than the ones in Leeds which are a little lacking in local character - this is spot on!
Martin Hutchinson
Great pub with excellent choice of beer, lager and spirits, great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
