A lovely old building, with nice food. Our server was helpful and pleasant. The table could have been a little larger as there were 5 of us. And the food could have been hotter. It would have got a higher rating, but they allowed dogs in, which, for me, is a big no-no in a place that serves food. Also, the disabled toilet was out of order, but apparently, it had only happened the day before. The main toilets were beautifully clean and nicely decorated with lovely soap and hand cream.
We stopped by this lovely, charming restaurant during a recent day trip to York for a bite to eat on a busy Saturday lunchtime. The restaurant was clean, airy, and nicely decorated with period features. There was ample seating both inside and out. We were served immediately and were attended to by lovely, friendly, and very attentive staff. The soup was absolutely delicious and was served nice and hot with soft bread and lots of softened butter.
Two added bonuses to this restaurant wad they served non-alcoholic beers and was dog-friendly.
We stopped by Harkers for a light snack on our day out in York. Everything spot on. We ordered 2 soups of the day and the meal was exceptionally well presented. Nice & hot with ample butter for your bread. It's also a very spacious place with plenty of natural light and outdoor seating too. One little gripe was there was no brown bread available instead of white, but otherwise 5 stars all round. They also have alcohol free beer for the sobers 🍺👍
Found it by chance while looking for a place to have a bite to eat in York yesterday. Beautiful building, the service was quick and the food was very tasty and affordable. Highly recommended if you are visiting York.
Very beautiful inn. Cosy and spacious. The food was ok. And the price reasonable. The staff friendly and helpful. Very clean toilets, too. The only drawback: we were surrounded by a very loud group of people, whose volume and pitch rose more and more.
We booked online for a table of six for Sunday lunch on a very hot and busy August afternoon. The team there were attentive and helpful and the food excellent. Bill came to £111 including drinks which for six people seemed very reasonable. Enjoyed it a lot.
A nice pub in a good location in central York.
They have a good selection of drinks and serve cocktails, that said I wasn't particularly impressed with the range of beers. It kind of felt a bit more Wetherspoons than the traditional pub they promise on their website.
The building is gorgeous, it's worth going in just to absorb the ambience of the old architecture.
All in all, not a bad place for a drink, but you don't have to walk far past it to find something a bit better.
I can only comment on the drinks since it was too late for food, but I felt it was excellent. It was the one of four bars that could actually make a proper old fashioned.
We were on holiday in York and looking for somewhere to eat that served food the whole family would like. We tried Harkers as it looked very pleasant from the outside. I am so glad we did! The food was amazing! My award winning steak and ale pie was a proper pie, none of these excuses for pie with a puff pastry lid. Proper tasty shortcrust pastry packed with delicious steak. The accompanying chips were crispy, tasty and hot, and the gravy..........!!! My 12 year old had the chicken and chorizo and liked it so much he has insisted on writing his first ever review.
We will be back.

Popped in for lunch, I had the brisket sandwich and my wife had the club sandwich. Great value for money and the staff went above and beyond when I mentioned my allergies.
If you're in York and need a quick bite to eat that's both good quality and value for money, hawkers is your place.
