I love this place, great choice, great people great banter, best spuds ever.
I spend a good number of days each year – almost every year - in Birmingham, UK. My love for the city, that if often underrated and overlooked, has developed over decades, from a time when everything would shut down on the weekends to a hustling busting multicultural center full of activities and entertainment.
Birmingham has gone through a major food revolution over the last decade and the foodie-culture of the city reflects the diversity of the people that inhabit it. From the Caribbean food festival to the German Market and being famous for its Balti Triangle to being the home of quirky establishments like Jake’s Coffee Shop, Birmingham has it all and in abundance.
One of my early food memories from Birmingham is of eating Jacket Potatoes at the newly opened Pavilions center – sadly the last time I was in Birmingham, the very same Pavilions was shutting down.
My love for Jacket Potatoes has only grown over the years as there is something very comforting about eating a warm half-cut potato – with the skin, always – filled up with fillings of your choice – cottage cheese with fresh pepper sprinkled on top is my favourite, but baked beans, chicken curry, corn, all add a very distinctive taste to a perfectly baked potato.
A Jacket Potato is a healthier option too since the potatoes are baked, not fried, and you can choose whether you want to butter it up or not depending on your lifestyle preference.
Over the last few years another establishment in Birmingham has taken over the Jacket Potato business in a big way. Right opposite a Tesco in New Street is where you are more than likely to find long lines of people – around lunch time – culminating into a bright red food truck, The Potato Man.
It's a little trailer that I pass by on most days when going shopping in the center but around lunch is when it gets really active and noticeable. What started as a small “stand” has developed into a full blown truck now, and while in the early days if you were late, you would miss out on the food, now there is a good probability that you can still find them standing after the rush of the lunch hour.
The Potato Man quite simply serves the best Jacket Potatoes I have ever come across in my life. The potatoes are of a good size, beautifully and freshly baked, sometimes having a little char, with crispy crunchy skin and soft warmed interiors. Moreover, there is a good variety of choices when it comes to the fillings, and you can probably go on for a month trying all the variations available.
They butter up the potatoes (if asked) quite well – not at all stingy about it - and always provide service with a smile. The best part of all this is that you get pretty much a filling meal for about £2.50 (without drinks).
So, the next time you are in Birmingham city-center, and have a yearning for a heart-warming meal, grab a scrumptious bite at The Potato Man and you shall not be disappointed.

It was really nice experience in Birmingham and thankful of Anna for best service. She served me politely and suggested me nicely.
Food is fine. But didnt have more choices. I got a hot chocolate and that was also fine. Atmosphere is really noisy. It is because the cafe is situated in the centre of the station. Staff is efficient and helpful
Passing through with a while before my train. Sitting here working and can't fault it. Comfy seating, well made drinks. Best of all the staff are amazing! Especially the guy in the bobble hat.
Lots of options even late in the day. Chocolate Croissant was really nice.
Latte was really nice too, not super hot which allowed me to drink it straight away (this night be a negative point for some people)
Downside, paid for my croissant and the server forgot my order straight away and was confused why I was still there. The tables weren't overly clean but it was nice to have somewhere quieter to sit down.
I visited on the 20th March, Monday morning. I would just like to thank the staff working that day for all being so friendly, everyone was polite, smiley and welcoming.

Great service by Matee. Newly appointed by very friendly approach
It's my favourite coffee shop so I am going to be biased 😂
They offer a wide variety of food options big vegan and meat.
It's free to substitute any coffee with a vegan alternative if you let the barista / cashier know at the time of ordering.
Plenty of seating and is located at the centre of the New Street Station.
Try their subscription - it's totally worth it!!
I would like to thank Derron for his awareness that my sister was deaf. He was very patience and responded with hand gestures that she could understand. Excellent customer service.😃 Pret Grand Central, Birmingham
Absolutely fantastic!
I love their capuccino-cream & caramel so I stopped this morning to get one. I added two almond croissants and two pains au Raisins. When I got to the till they told me, its okay, its on the house.
I was completely shocked because I rarely get anything for free. It made me feel great, in a smashing mood for the day and definitely will be going back for more. But of course I will pay!
India who served me was so lovely... 😊.
Love this place.
