The George

We came for a Sunday lunch with family and friends. Pub looks great from outside, well looked after and inviting. Outside seats could be wiped dry as they were all wet, so if someone wanted to sit outside, it would be a problem. (It was sunny on the day, but raining the night before) Inside looks beautiful, very stylish, clean and inviting. Nice selection of wines on the wall, as well as well equipped bar. Team was very attentive from the very beginning, always to hand, helpful and knowledgeable. Really nice first impression. However food brought the whole experience down. We’ve ordered selection of Sunday roasts and macaroni cheese on the side. Firstly, all our macaroni cheese was almost cold, so that wasn’t good start already. Sunday roast looked nice, but I would expect slightly more for the price. Beef roast came with two thin slices of beef, one carrot and one parsley with couple of roasted potatoes. Beef was tender so I can’t complain, but the highlight of the dish was gravy and pudding. I’ve ordered trio of roasts and must say was disappointed, pork belly looked almost like an overcooked slice of bacon, chicken leg was small and dry and one very thin slice of beef. A bit disappointed with Sunday roast. Good quality overall but based on very good experience from the service and the ambience, food scores the lowest. Desserts were decent, but again, missing the mark. Deconstructed cheesecake, I would have preferred a nice slice of tasty, beautifully presented cheesecake but received 3 roughly shaped balls with dusting of crumble on the plate. Brownie was too soft, more like a cake/mousse. We did enjoy the stay, as ambience and service was great, but food needs to improve for us to come back regularly

Booked a table after a trip to London as we preferred to eat locally . Service was excellent, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Food again excellent despite our firs choice of Dover sole was sold out but the bass was very good as an alternative. Overall a great experience as always and I would not hesitate to recommend The George to anyone.

Lovely place, really well looked after and had some really nice furnishings. Although children are allowed, I wouldn't consider it 'Kid-friendly'. Staff do give awkward death glances and stares at those kids that dare to have fun 😀 food was fantastic quality however the chips are for 1 although they say it feeds 2

WOW! My first beer (Guinness of course) and meal in an English pub in the UK. It was exceptional - beer was poured correctly (never take that for granted), meal was excellent with great presentation (think of sprig of rosemary with bangers and mash) and excellent staff (friendly, attentive, smiled and looked you in the eye when talking). Decor was spot on and sympathetic to the town the pub was it. Can't wait to get back there tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and ...
