I really didn’t know much about this place apart from that it was in the West End, I liked it’s name and that I’d seen a voucher deal so decided to give the place a go. The voucher was £20 for two starters, mains and two glasses of prosecco. We had a table reserved in a snug corner with a sofa and a high backed arm chair. The Mad Hatter is a relatively small place but does have a cosy feel. The menu was extensive and offered a good range, although lacking somewhat in the dessert department with only one on offer (but it was sticky toffee pudding). I opted for Camembert to start followed by a steak sandwich for my main. My dining companion went for the duck spring rolls for starter and the same steak sandwich for main.
I rather liked the Mad Hatter. It’s in a slightly awkward location, but I hope it sustains as I can see myself growing rather fond of late night pop-ins
Following the (eventual) success of the Cuckoos Nest, the owners decided to branch out and they now have a second pub in Edinburgh. Much like their Tollcross venue they will be hoping for the shift in drinking culture in the area to move inline with modern habits where quality of drink comes before the pricing and how many pints of poor beer you can get for under a tenner.
The bar is in many ways similar to the Cuckoos Nest, the same colours are used to good effect with the vivacious red vaguely reminiscent of a scene from Dario Argento's film Inferno. Bright and attractive whites also lure people in, but the quality of drinks and service haul you in from the rough exterior first.
The range of beers are fantastic, the music being played is excellent and merges in with the feel of the bar superbly and the food menu also looks ace, however I have yet to try the food and will update the review accordingly. The owners clearly know how to run a pub efficiently and how to make it attractive at the same time, making this a bar worth a visit.
Great place, great people. Lovely little bar that does great food. Really welcoming and well worth a visit.
Lovely friendly pub, it was a little quiet when we went in there, but the barman was super friendly, and the Guinness was lovely,a small bisu bar.
Small pub serving good food. Me and 3 others had dinner here the other day. Service was fast and the food was pretty good for pub grub. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We got chicken goujons, duck spring rolls, bao buns & bacon and cheesy chips for starters. All of which went down well. For mains, 2 of us got burgers, my bro got nachos and my wife got the chicken and chorizo wrap. All of which was pretty spot on apart from the burger patties themselves. In the bun with the fillings they were fine but on their own they were very dry and lacked any flavour. This was the same for both burgers. Overall, a decent dinner and particularly good for pub food.
Delicious food, lovely staff, great atmosphere.
Lovely pub, attentive and professional staff, lovely food! We had a warm goats cheese salad, Bao buns and spring rolls. Wines and then the best Coffee Martini I have ever had. We will be back!
Great friendly staff and excellent service. A little expensive had pint of Morretti and bottle of cider £11. But nothing new for Edinburgh music was great able to have a conversation without shouting at each other.
Lovely little pub ,barmen were great and friendly superb pint of Guinness ,they don't serve food here
A good bar with nice atmosphere, decent tunes and a function room downstairs. Food's also pretty good. Not much choice of ale on tap but a well stocked fridge behind the bar. (Edited to 5 stars 'cause the barman was such a nice guy)
Called in for quick drink service and atmosphere second to non and so reasonable priced
Good place to chill out after a long day and have a few drinks. The kitchen is open until late, and the food is very nice. There are also games available to play including connect 4 and Jenga. Staff and freindly and the drink choice is vast.
