Henderson's Vegan Restaurant, Edinburgh review – Delightful dining that ticks all the right (veg) boxes. The cauliflower 'steaks' – though in no way carnivorous – were delicious, consisting of a couple of slabs of perfectly roast brassica that were further enhanced through subtle addition of spice, either cumin or fennel in this case. Accompanied by a mushroom and peppercorn sauce that was so tastily creamy it was hard to believe there was no dairy involved in its production, and freshly pickled red cabbage, which provided a lovely fresh acidity, this was a great dish.
A great vegan restaurant in Edinburgh. We enjoyed our food and cake (chocolate and hazelnut) with raspberry sauce was just amazing. We went for 2 days. Had Buddha bowl, cake, lentil soup the 1st day and pan cake ,share for 2 and soup again. Being a vegan, I would say that wherever I had vegan food I have spend loads of money but Henderson I get the full satisfaction for the money spent. Loved it......Hope to have more branches every where in UK ..
Dinner here was a fantastic experience. The service was great, friendly, helpful, and didn't leave us waiting long. The food came out soon, and was delicious, as were our accompanying teas. We started with garlic bread, had a salad, and most memorable the gingerbread ice cream dessert. We left smiling, and would return the same.
Henderson’s former bistro was converted to a vegan speciality restaurant, earlier this year. It has since managed to attract a particularly sneering review from the Guardian, which prompted me to check it out. I gave it an early evening visit, just before Hush Hour, during December. The place has been given a smart makeover. I always rather liked the place, although I’ve only previously reviewed the cafeteria for breakfast. This refreshed bistro feels like a smooth transition to a new look rather than a revolutionary new approach.
Whether you’re omnivore, vegetarian or vegan, Henderson’s Vegan is definitely worth a visit. Their small menu is delicious nonetheless and demonstrates perfectly how versatile and flavourful a meat and dairy free diet can be. My only hope is that more vegan places pop up in the city soon – if this is what vegan eating tastes like all the time, then you can sign me up!
I couldn't wait to go try the new vegan bistro out! My usual problem with hendersons was that, although I enjoyed the food, the service was always either a bit half arsed or unsure. However, the staff member who served us was brilliant and couldn't do enough to help us. He recommended dishes and was happy to make friendly chat.
Food, as always was brilliant. What I loved is that they make the food appealing to those who perhaps aren't vegetarian, adding vegan cheesy dishes (which I can't get enough of).
Make sure you squeeze the nachos in as a starter... they're worth the stuffed tummy.
I went to Henderson's Bistro for dinner with my mother last Monday. As a vegan, it was amazing to sit down and be able to eat everything on the menu! I ordered the bean wrap with beansprout salad, nachos and guacamole. The portion was massive and only £9.45 so it was definitely value for money! And wow was it tasty as well. I can honestly say it was one of the best meals I had eaten in a long time. The atmosphere was peaceful and staff were very kind and helpful and overall I had a wonderful visit. 5 stars!
Fantastic! Five stars doesn’t seem like enough for the service or the food. Just delicious. Not just as vegetarian food, but as food-food for anyone who loves flavour. The staff were all so lovely too. An excellent start to my trip. Oh, and the cocktails - chef’s kiss!
I’ve lived in Edinburgh for two years but have never been so impressed by a restaurant as I was yesterday.
I’m vegan, and my friend is veggie and gluten intolerant, and I don’t think we’ve ever been so spoilt for choice: not only was most of the menu suitable for us off the bat, but the wonderful staff were able to advise us on how we could make certain items suitable.
We had a selection of items from across the menu: particularly lovely was the soup! Gorgeous bread, fresh salads… what more could you want??? All freshly made on site.
Really chilled atmosphere, lovely decor. All the pleasures of being somewhere very upmarket but without unnecessary frivolities. Reasonably priced too.
So impressed by the service- we were served by Louise and Becky, who were genuinely so helpful and nice. Attentive but not overbearing- it’s a hard balance to get right but they did it perfectly.
Thank you Henderson’s- we will be back! 💕
Expected more for the price. Overall, a delightful experience but nothing stood out to me as truly exceptional other than the lavender honey sorbet (which I failed to take a picture of). The ambiance was great and the staff were really friendly. Yet, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. Perhaps, it’s my expectation for such innovative restaurant that failed me.
New favourite restaurant, aside from David Bann. Exceeded expectations. Perfect date night. Unique, attractive interior design. Most consistent high-quality staff I’ve experienced in years—everyone I came into contact with was professional, friendly, and well trained with a refreshing authenticity about them. Phenomenal menu. Positively innovative drink options—only ever been to one other place in the UK that had a rhubarb and custard cocktail, which is my favourite. Cannot wait to return. 💪🏽🏆
Excellent vegetarian and vegan cooking. Meat eaters should definitely give it a try! The haggis and the burger were really tasty. Worth mentioning the wonderful chips!
The cocktails are fantastic too. Welcoming and friendly staff. I was delighted to eat real chocolate mousse again! The place we love coming to every time we're in Edinburgh.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! Highly recommended!
Henderson is one of our latest discovered gems in the city. Watching the vegetarian/vegan scene growing fast in Edinburgh, we wanted to give it a try and go away from the more mainstream cuisines.
First interaction was over the phone as I tried to book a table last minute on a Saturday. The gentleman over the phone (name Barry) was very helpful and he helped us with providing alternatives to get us a table. Getting there, we were very positively impressed of how friendly were all the people working there.
Coming to the food, I would easily say that we were highly impressed! The quality of the dishes and the combination of flavours were so spot on! We were a mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians and we all were commenting positive our dishes and sides.
Personality as a non-vegetarian, I was highly surprised by the fact the I didn't miss at all the lack of non-vegetarian ingredients. I will be most definitely going back and highly recommending the place. Give it a try and you will definitely will not be disappointed.
P.S. Thank you Barry and all the Henderson team for the beautiful night.
Our first meal in Edinburgh and it remained the most memorable. Everything I had was amazing, fresh, full of flavour. My non-vegan friends were full of praise. + the staff was suuuuuper nice and loved the decoration of the space. TOP NOTCH
Most people in the USA don’t expect culinary innovation to come out of Scotland, but this restaurant genuinely shines with regards to quality, inventiveness, and skill in farm to table cooking.
Henderson’s specializes in creating unexpected combinations of vegetarian ingredients to reproduce traditional dishes like haggis (with root mash, whisky, tarragon creme, caramelized red onions) and tagine (jackfruit and chickpeas with apricot and tahini). While the combination of flavors can be surprising, everything worked. In many ways, this may be the reincarnation of Portland Oregon’s Malka (Rest in peace) across the pond.
This is not bland vegan cooking. The dishes are EXTREMELY ingredient and effort intensive, while being large in portion and an incredible value for the meal we had. Above all, the combination of ambiance, style, taste, and vibrant preparation are singular.
A little off the beaten track but so well worth the walk out of town. The food was superb, the service was immaculate and the atmosphere was relaxed and very comfortable. Highly recommend visiting - you won’t be disappointed!
A delicious, fresh and colorful dinner, served by a nice and professional staff. The place is very nice and the cocktails 🍸 were excellent. We were really happy with the fact that our server knew we were vegan (from the lady who sat us) and always mentioned our dish is vegan when it was served. Definitely go here if you’re looking for fresh, unique and delicious food.
