The pastries are good. Although didn't see any prices advertised, maybe they were facing the outer side of the window but there was people sitting there so couldn't see. The range of cakes is impressive, cream and fruit everywhere. The portions are also large and I didn't really need two, the Mille Feuille crumbled everywhere as it should and the creme patisserie in the tart was silky smooth.
I went to this bakery as part of my cake crawl and fell in love with it. Upon entering we were greeted by the sweetest woman, who is the owner of Maison Bertaux. She introduced the pastries and their prices to us and we were immediately seated upstairs.
The display at Maison Bertaux is so inviting. It's filled with fresh cream cakes, tarts and croissants. We went with this traditional French cream cake with a choux pastry base, chocolate and vanilla cream and a profiterole to top. Along with that we ordered a peach and pear tart, a vanilla cream and strawberry cake and a mixed berries cheesecake.
I loved it all. It reminded me of my childhood where we would get cream cakes for everyone's birthdays and every other occasion. You could taste the freshness of the cakes and how good quality ingredients were used.
The atmosphere also added to the experience. It was the sort of place where you just order a slice of cake and a pot of tea with a few friends and sit there chatting for hours on end.
Everything about the patisserie just made me love it.
If I was to recommend a cake, I'd say the cheesecake. It wasn't a baked cheesecake, it was the non-bake gelatin one. It was very light and is a must try.
Overall, I'd say everyone whose in London should visit atleast once. It's a lovely experience and not too pricey either.
Edit: I went to this patisserie again the other day and I'd like to add that the scones are a must try too. They were massive and tasted delicious both on their own and paired with clotted cream and jam. I love the almost home like atmosphere this place creates.
I stopped here for lunch and was completely blown away by the quality of the cafe. There were beautiful cakes everywhere and the owner was really friendly. I was recommended to try the croissants as they were famous. I had a ham and cheese croissant and it was delicious. I'm looking forward to stopping here again next week!
Malaysia Kopi Tiam has shifted locations through central London a few times now and it was only through bellaphon that I learned of its current location. Back when it was at its first spot, a number of years ago, I visited it with my brother but I think I
In the way of many of Soho's famous institutions, Maison Bertaux feels ever so slightly run down, like it stayed up a little too late last night - but you know, in the most attractive way possible. Serving up decadent and elaborate cakes and pastries and manned by beautiful wait staff, the place knows how cute it is.
If you want atmosphere, tarts, good coffee and joie de vivre with a cast of characters that could have their own sitcom, then Maison Bertaux is your place. This cosy patisserie on Soho's Greek Street has been around since 1871, when it was founded by Communard refugees from Paris. For the past couple of decades it has been run by actress Michelle Wade, an ebulient, unusual woman with a dramatic air and a caring soul. She is complimented behind the counter by Johan, a wry, stiff-legged, accordion playing Austrian, and Metin, an urbane playwright. Michelle's art dealer sister Tania holds regular exhibitions in the upstairs tea room and a Bastille day tableaux is staged in the street outside every July. A cavalcade of other marvellous characters, both customers and staff have frequented the place over the years and it's very easy to get a good conversation started with whatever random bunch of types is in there at the time. The full compliment of what is available to eat is displayed in the front window and consists of a variety of fruit tarts, flans, cakes and other pastries - the Dijon slice is a staple. The food and refreshments are fine, but the atmosphere and the company is first-class.
London's top classic cafe is a gem with a wide cake selection, wonderful staff, and an amazing owner. Despite its small size, it boasts a charming atmosphere. The cheesecake stands out, offering a unique and delightful taste. I highly recommend this place.
Sweet Soho treat - I desperately needed a sugar fix. After wandering around Soho looking at a few stores and reading google map reviews, I decided on going to Maison Bertaux.
I sometimes find Soho quite overwhelming. Generally it's kind of pricey. I'd had take away from here years ago. I bought a chocolate cream puff to go. I like the presentation.
Next time, I might try the scones or a croissant, but sit down there. It is a cute little cafe and seems generally pretty busy. It's also quite impressive how well they do as there were slim pickings at the end of the day. I think this is probably one of those places for the ambience in Soho and where you can get that super cool vibe.
Worth the trip and worth the hype. A lovely morning to sit out at a table along the sidewalk. Espresso drinks are great, traditional French pastries are hearty and flavorful, and they also have some unique dessert options. Oh, and don’t forget the scones that come with a huge portion of fresh butter and jam! A great breakfast.
What a charming bakery! The smell was heavenly. The croissants were delicious paired with some hot coffee. The croissants were so large we were able to take half of them to go. Highly recommend!
I had a Paris Brest to take away, and I was pleasantly surprised - it was excellent, not too rich, not too buttery, just perfectly balanced. The selection of pastries was great as well, with many fruit-based options and equally nut/chocolate-heavy choices.
However, hygiene is a big concern for me. For example, there was a large shared salad bowl right below the cashier, so every customer left a bit of themselves for someones lunch 😄. Also, the service is rushed, and the queue is pretty inconvenient, as there’s not much space to stand.
A long term regular, if not frequent stop off, especially if there’s a free seat outside. The coffee is excellent, pastries are good but really it’s the place itself that’s so special. It’s intrinsic to Soho, and my memories and continued enjoyment of the area. I love it.
Delicious sweets and scones. It would be better if the scones can be heated again before serving. Lovely cafe and the granny (staff) is very nice and friendly.
Lovely, quirky cafe int he heart of Soho. Scones were amazing, staff is absolutely cute and they serve a wide range of cakes and pastries. 🥰
If you were planning on visiting a bakery in London, this is it. Great variety! I haven't really seen this anywhere else. Fresh and delicious. And the owner was very kind. I had a bad day, crying, because of the comments in my direction from someone on the street, and the owner made me feel much better with her kind words.
Though the building shows signs of age it adds to the experience. The tea and scones and pastry were delicious. Staff was personable and seemed happy to be there even on a busy day. We would absolutely come back again.
