Must admit I was dragged half way across the country for my daughter to see a teen idol here, think 300 screaming 14/15 year olds, however I was delighted to find not only a great building but awesome food, great staff and an epic dj all creating the coolest vibe to hang out in whilst waiting for your 15 yr old to drool over some you tube sensation and scream herself silly. Loved it. Chef is amazing!!!!!!!!
We've just had our wedding here. We already loved the venue because of all the gigs we've been to here and great times we've had. We love it even more now and all our guests commented on what a top venue and a top night it was. Best night ever. Big thanks to all the staff for helping to make it a perfect day and a proper top night. More like being at a gig than a wedding. Even the older guests loved it
Great food, great atmosphere.
We pre-booked a buffet dinner for 20 people. The food was excellent, with a great selection that was both vegetarian and vegan friendly. The place has a fun and lively atmosphere, and the staff were extremely helpful.
we tried this place today, after finding it on happy cow (alas, the vegetarian friendly category on here is unreliable). if this review gets deleted, it will be my last, let’s see...
anyway, the deaf institute has a lot of vegan comfort food options, and an all- vegan sunday menu, including a very generously served roast dinner. it’s a cosy / casual venue, order at the bar and sit where you like, no fuss at all. we had the roast and loved it. a new favourite place for us in manchester
Friendly staff, proper home made food. No frozen chips here. Good value. Good roast dinners on Sunday! Definitely recommend a visit!!
A good night was had by all! Service and hospitality throughout the evening from the Deaf Institute and BrewDog staff was excellent. As far as I am aware, this event was a ‘one off’ although who knows, it seemed a success and they may decide to repeat it! In the meantime, I suggest a pub crawl around visiting Trof, the Deaf Institute, BrewDog Manchester and any other venues you see along the way that offer these interesting and full flavoured tipples!
Brilliant place with a fantastic atmosphere and great music (they've got a music venue too in the building). Great innovative and affordable food. Brilliant venue for Sunday roasts too (turn up at 12 for rare beef).
Popped in here during the Psych Fest as it is such an iconic gig venue and we were not disappointed! There are at least two rooms of music (that I could see) and our gig was on the top floor. The room had a tiny VIP balcony on one side and at the back big stepped seating which was lovely to give my legs a rest, whilst still getting a great view. My only complaint was how loud it was, this may have been the band or the fact it is a small place, nothing some ear plugs couldn't solve. Overall a really cool venue and I would definitely go back for another gig there (and bring my ear plugs)
Went to a concert with a friend. Very cozy vibe, fab staff. Their foods are tasty with good price. A lot of vegan foods available and the menu is playing with words - very interesting! The upper floor for the show is not big but quite enough for you to have fun. They even have a little balcony above the stage! You can stay super close to the band/players and the view from the balcony is pretty good.
Went to The Deaf Institute for my 19th birthday and had an amazing time. Went to the 80's (and country) night and my friends and I got into some 80's themed clothing for the night. Staff are great and friendly. Good prices for drinks too!
Brilliant venue for gigs and live music. After the gig there is Late night music on by artists such as Clint Boon. 2 different bars. Great place. Open til 3am on Saturday morning.
Lovely venue, small but does the job and gives you a great view of the stage wherever you're standing. Restaurant has delicious and decently priced vegan food. We had butternut squash risotto, pimped fries, fish and chips, and banana waffles, which were all really nice and would recommend. Would've given Deaf Institute 5 stars if the bathrooms weren't so utterly disgusting.
Nice venue big bar down stairs the concert room was not the biggest but nice and cosy decent bar got served pretty easy nice selection of ales mostly cans and bottles old ales . Good sound coming from the bands there was quite a few seats at the back cinema style which some people appreciated their was also some VIP seats on a balcony with a big rsj running through it didn't look very comfortable. The beer prices weren't the cheapest but the staff were friendly would go back
Great little venue, holds around 200 in an old style theatre setting. Some bench seats at the back and an odd fishtank looking viewing balcony. Going a little shabby in places but that kinda adds to the charm of the place.
Only go if you like the up close and personal experience.
Amazing venue. Excellent decor and atmos. High stage to see the bands. Enclosed Outside smoking area for the puffers. Love the spot but.... 1 bar person for a packed gig. Car park behind was a fiver for the evening which isn't bad considering such handy location. Top Spot.
Characterful and highly entertaining decor. Shabby chic, Victorian splendour, and a little bit of chintz. The exterior is impressive, but the interior takes on many "looks" as you wander round.
A good selection of drinks available, priced from moderate to expensive. Majors on being a sophisticated burger bar, with a few nice trimmings. There are a goodly selection of vegan options, for the non animal harmers. Food was good, very good, but not outstanding (it's a burger bar).
What helped made the venue 5 stars was the friendly staff. Genuinely helpful and smiling. Will definitely be visiting again.
"Deaf inst" has been a firm favourite of mine since I first arrived in Manchester 11 years ago. It is a staple of the Oxford Road scene and hosts really excellent live music. Some of my favourite gigs have been here including Jenny Owen Youngs and most recently the amazing The Deep Blue, an indie-folk vocal harmony extravaganza.
It was great to come back to this celebrated venue after the height of the pandemic, although I believe it changed owners due to lockdown.
I hope to come back for many more excellent gigs in the future.
