Newport Tandoori

This restaurant offers flavoursome food and plenty of less common dishes. Our incompetent waitress sadly took the shine off what could have been a wonderful night. We opted for the share-plate of mixed entrees and can recommend this. There’s great variety in flavour and texture. It was very enjoyable (and substantial). For mains we had the Bhindi, Narial Chicken and Nawabi chicken with plain rice and garlic naan. The Bhindi (okra) was pretty mildly flavoured and not in a rich tomato-base as we were expecting. It was a little uninspired. The chicken dishes were delicious and complex in flavour. The Narial was the pick—curry leaves a-plenty gave a rich, nutty flavour. The Nawabi was slightly sweeter with coconut and cashew. The garlic naan was also delicious. Our waitress somehow misheard ‘Nawabi chicken’ for ‘Mughlai Beef’. It’s hard to imagine how these two could have been mixed up. We pointed out the mistake and were offered to wait while they cooked the beef for us. We chose to accept what had been presented rather than waste it. We weren’t given a discount. Our waitress was also absent for much of the night—focused more on takeaway orders than dine-in guests. We waited 20mins to attract her attention to get the bill. She also hovered over me waiting for me to finish my entree so that she could take my plate. This was because she’d brought out the first of the mains before we were finished the entree. I expect better.
