Had an amazing party. Big thanks to Clare and Sam for making it a great party and for all their all help.
Having been to the other pub they own and sampled some of the amazing seafood they have to offer, I thought its only right to try this place out too.
Amazing from the start.
We were welcomed into a fantastic vibe, welcomed by the landlady who is a really genuinely lovely person.. Served some of the best conditioned real ale I've ever tried. The landlady came over to our table and offered us to put some music on along with everyone else in the bar so everyone got a turn on open jukebox night, was a fantastic idea and vibe created by the people. Myself and my friend were stunned with the amount of people yet the landlord and landlady still managed to get around and speak to people. We will definitely be back for another visit extremely soon... I think I've just found my new local.
Excellent beer, wonderful food! Try the stout, beautiful! CAMRA pub of the year 2009; dog friendly. A proper pub.
As a regular of.many years, I feel.I have to review, given the somewhat disingenuous review further down.
I have been a regular for.many years, seen the ups and downs of the pub, and been a proud witness to the many deserved awards the pub has won for its beers and atmosphere.
The new management have been in place for less than a month, but DO offer the same welcoming smile that I have come to love about this pub over the years, regardless of management. Perhaps the reviewer further down went in on a quiet night? Even then I am.genuinely surprised to read the new management were not welcoming...I have always found them.to be so.
Anyway, the pub is currently having a little facelift.. but the beers are as good as ever, and food back on and rather yummy.
This pub is at the heart of the community: the new management deserve support.
It's a great pub...I love going there!
Recently visited and was welcomed by the new landlord and lady. Pub had a lovely vibe. We will be back again soon for the cash bingo!
This was an amazing pub in Colchester. It took 3 years to build up a great reputation and win many awards but then 3 weeks to go downhill due to personal circumstances.
New owners took it over and it does not feel like the same pub. Gone are the friendly bar staff who knew us, what we liked and ones that could pour a proper pint. Drinks we got served had a good finger missing on all drinks.
Bingo nights are not what this pub is. Its a Real Ale pub, serving decent, full pints. Maybe we'll try again in a few weeks but we'll see.
Visited this cracking little venue on Saturday night. Great selection of extremely well kept real ales and a great selections of gins too. Friendly and welcoming - both the staff and the locals.
I would have awarded it and excellent rating but there were a couple of areas, including tables etc that could do with a deep clean.
Not sure whether they still serve food though.
Found this through a CAMRA search, took a while to find it (no thanks to Google Maps).
It’s slightly out of the main area, had the vibe of being a “local’s pub”. Really good choice of ales and was impressed that they knew which ones were likely to run out (as an ale drinker that means so much).
We shared a ploughman’s and chips which with a little more finesse could have been outstanding.
Feel really mean criticising as they are a young couple putting their soul into the ales but we felt that the food let them down a bit. But after all that, it appears to be a drinkers pub.
So after all that, if you have a passion for real ale, go for it, they know how to look after their ales.
We had our work Christmas party at The New Inn last night. Joe and his team couldn’t have done more for us. They catered for all our needs, we had a fantastic buffet and were looked after all night. Thank you!
Great range of real beers and ciders in boxes. Close to the trainstation if youve had one too many. Im a fan of the Cheecky pig cider but be careful the bar waitresses dont think youre insulting them!
Went for a sneaky pint - really nice pub - good pint and choice of ales was in the back bar to watch the football - it was quiet but chatting to a few of the locals - could be my new front room - highly recommend
I had my baby shower here on Saturday 15th September 2018 and it was amazing! Joe was really helpful in the lead up to the event getting back to me with answers to all my questions so quickly. Shannon was amazing on the day always there as soon as we needed anything but didn't crowd us and was so positive and welcoming. The rest of the staff were also incredible.
The facilities were great. The function room was spacious and is much bigger than the pictures, and is also set in a small out building away from the main bar so is nice and intimate but not too far away from the bar. I had an amazing day and would definitely host more events again!
I have visited The New Inn for food numerous times, but only just got around to writing a review. Two of us ordered fish and chips on Good Friday. Even though the pub was busy the food arrived in good time. Delicious food well worth the money, although the portion was too big to finish! Every time I have visited the staff have been friendly and welcoming, the food has been delicious (previously ordered nachos, chilli con carne and the chocolate brownie). I would recommend to friends, they also have a good selection of vegan and vegetarian food. Hope to visit again soon.
Had the scotch egg and salad (which has proved incredibly popular) and I can certainly understand why. It was definitely not a “2 for £1” you get in supermarkets. Home cooked to perfection. Loved it
Four adults, two kids, one dog and one puppy - brilliantly catered for even to finding us a cosy space to eat while locals watched the Spurs match in a busier than normal bar late on a Saturday afternoon. Excellent food, great choice to accommodate all tastes. (The curry has more than "a little kick"!). Good chat and story telling re pub history. The room we were in was warm, beautiful wooden beams and fairy lights giving it a great feel. Time to talk and celebrate a family birthday in a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you Joe and Shannon for being great hosts.
We booked our Christmas party here on 14 December. We were greeted by extremely welcoming landlord Joe and his team. Everything was perfect for a lively party of 22 colleagues celebrating the festive season. The Christmas menu was perfect and the food was homemade, really tasty and plentiful, with extra Yorkshire puds and pigs in Blankets! The function room was warm, pretty and cosy. And the beer and wine was great too. We had a fabulous night thanks to the amazing hospitality from Joe and the Old New Inn team. A little gem of a pub. I will definitely be back. Thank you!
We had our annual Christmas dinner at The New Inn this year - 23 of us in all, and we couldn't have been made more welcome.
The food was so tasty, and despite our numbers, served lovely and hot.. We also appreciated the attention to detail and how determined they were to make sure we all had a good time, which we certainly did. I felt I took a bit of a leap of faith choosing the New Inn, as I hadn't eaten with them before, but I for one shall certainly be returning.I particularly recommend the vegan nutroast - absolutely delicious! Everything was home cooked and the guys were raving about the beers for days afterwards!
It is the Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year, so it was no surprise that there was an excellent selection of superb beer. The staff were young, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and pleasant while the pub itself was comfortable with several rooms and a smoking area. We were there for a meeting in the barn - around 25 people who had pre ordered food. Around 20 minutes before lunch, the power went off all through the pub. What could be done? The staff sent out for £150 worth of pizza with chicken legs and doughnuts and returned all the money they had collected. No praise is too high for the pub, beer and staff. Go and try it.
My fiance and I stopped here as a dog friendly pub after a morning walking. We were pleasantly met by the staff who made our energetic spaniel feel very welcome. Food was fresh and the cook even sourced meat from the local butcher. Food was hot and satisfying and great portions. The dog was happy and so were we. Will definitely be back. Thank you 😊
Well what more can I say, what a fantastic pub.
My boyfriend and I had the pleasure to meet the owners when they were visiting a neighboring town after Christmas, after talking to them about their pub we decided to visit at the weekend.
We were not disappointed - the real ales were great and there was a good selection of other drinks too.
The pub is made up of two bars, one that had football on and was really busy with people watching the game, it had a really great atmosphere. The other (which is were we went) was quieter (but still busy) with a nice open fire and comfy sofas. The locals were so lovely, really chatty and funny, we only planned to go in for one drink but ended up staying for three because it was just so good.
We had been on a pub crawl that day and visited 9 pubs in total, this was by far the best of the lot!!
