Haven't been in The Castle Tavern for at least a couple of years. Last time I was there, I didn't have the best pint of Old Hooky I'd ever tasted. So, I was a little hesitant in purchasing it again. The young bar person told me it was fine...and so it was, I'm happy to report! The atmosphere was pleasant, so a good experience all round.

Refurbished and a great beer place in Oxford. Conveniently located near the Westgate this pub has a wide, varying, range of craft beer on tap. Helpful staff will give advice and let you sample and they usually have some very interesting, even challenging, beers available. They also do more standard draught and bottled beer and the usual range of other drinks. When we last popped in they had an open mic and poetry night on downstairs and it was well attended and an unpretentious diversion.

We loved this pub. Traditional friendly and good food. Really enjoyed the pub quiz 😀

Great to have a Hooky pub in the centre of Oxford. Friendly staff and mixed clientele make for an enjoyable relaxing spot with good beer. Thoroughly recommend. Quiet but still great beer on new visit during the lunchtime period. Also value for money.

I had a function downstairs on Saturday and it was great! The staff are incredible and the pub has such a great vibe!

Brilliant food and atmosphere. Staff friendly and helpful and work hard to be Covid safe. Only downside was limited menu and a bit greasy food but very much enjoyed and would still go again if in town.

Great little pub in Oxford. Good drinks on tap. Wait staff seemed overwhelmed, as I think there were literally two people working that night. We are from the states and the authentic pub experience was nice, but there was a very loud group of people in there and it kind of ruined the experience a little bit. Food was very average, and mostly just pizza. Not a lot of selection here. But a nice atmosphere!

Delicious pizza and sweet potato fries. Chill and cozy atmosphere. The staff was friendly and accommodating.

Awesome staff, great atmosphere, excellent entertainment & a wonderful life drawing session 3 times a week.

I would say this is definitely a straight pub rather than a gay pub, which isn’t a bad thing. You just would never be able to tell it was a gay establishment. They had an amazing cherry cider. Based on reviews on the other gay establishments in town, this one had the best.

Yes! Finally a Hook Norton pub in Oxford. While there are some decentish pubs in the city, too few sell Oxfordshire beer. The Castle is lovely, very friendly barman and excellent full range of Hook Norton beers.

Great music - acoustic guitar and great voice and then a brilliant words- smith. A real treat. Super friendly and great service.

Awesome little pub. Stayed at the premier inn next door so this was our first stop before night out. Bar staff extremely welcoming and had a food variety of drinks. Being from Somerset and favour cider I was introduced to Hooks Cider which I must say was very nice! Great pub.

on a friday night myself and my group of friend were served by syrup and deacon. amazing bar tenders with amazing service and had amazing banter! we personally as a friendship group find it hard to find a pub with friendly team member that do more then just serve drinks! i’m sure these two can’t be paid enough!! will definitely be returning to this pub if they’ll have us back 😂

I love Old Hookey so when I realised this was a Hook Norton Brewery pub I had do pay a visit. The menu was slightly sparse but the quality was really good and the beer was great too. A really nicely designed pub.

Lovely little pub, next to the Westgate so always handy. Good beer (mostly from the locally old hocky brewing company) and pizza if your need it. Some fun games to kill the time and lots of space. Also kid and dog friendly so all good.

Nice easy atmosphere and great Hook Norton beer. I visited on a Saturday night when the fairly loud drum and bass music didn't seem necessary.

Fantastic pub, everything a decent pub should be, great atmosphere, staff, live music, and most of all the beer. I highly recommend a visit

I am really glad to see the Castle still standing strong. The refurb is excellent, but what earns my five stars is based upon their inclusive attitude to all. As a gay man with disabilities there is no sense of judgement about me. They don't have a label for the type of pub that they aim to be aside from warm and welcoming. That's a rare commodity in Oxford, as there's nothing worse than walking into a pub only to be greeted by the staff and punters that avoid you yet stare at you! That means a lot to me, and I hope that more people will rediscover the Castle.
With so many places serving attitude I'll go to a place where they are knowledgeable, decently priced, and friendly over a chainstore pub that come and go. Give them a try! You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I echo what Ditta has said. The people behind the bar are very knowledgeable and love telling you about the beers and what the pub has to offer. What I really like is the wonderful warm welcome when you enter the pub. Fantastic pizza; not the usual you would expect but exciting toppings like artichokes, prosciutto, olives, at a reasonable price too. Whilst there is a good choice of popular Hook Norton beers there are revolving guest ones too. This has to be, arguably, one of the best pubs in Oxford.

This pub is ideally situated at the heart of the new town.
