I ate here last weekend and it was very busy with a queue on the stairs. Quite a few people in the queue were upset by this, but I didn't mind.
I'm Coeliac which means I can't have gluten in my food. This means that even the smallest crumb could make me ill - fortunately Mother Hubbards can provide gluten free batter which is cooked in a separate fryer so that there are no cross contamination risks. They even provide gluten free vinegar (without having to ask)! Awesome stuff!
I ordered gluten free fish and chips and it was delicious! The gluten free batter is obviously different to the 'normal' batter but it is one of the best ones I have tried in my several years of eating gluten free food. Unfortunately we didn't stay for starters or pudding so I can't comment on those :(
One thing I will mention for the coeliac/gluten allergy community is that the coke is on tap and they could not confirm if it was safe or not. There person I ate out with had the coke and he guessed at it being a cheaper brand to coca cola so it probably has barley in it. (not confirmed). They do have bottled J20's for safety though :)
I will visit again.
Always consistent, excellent quality, best fish n chips in the country as far as I'm concerned. I always recommend this place to friends etc and they're never disappointed! . I live 60 miles away and make the trip just for these - well worth it.
An excellent Fish Restaurant, good menu. We enjoyed the all day medium haddock, chips, bread d butter, pot of tea with a side order of garden peas. You can order wine or beer. There is a dessert menu. Seating is nicely spaced. Staff polite, friendly and professional. There is a lift for the disabled as the restaurant is upstairs, also a stairs lift to the toilet facility on an upper floor.
Attended at lunchtime, was busy but we got a table swiftly. Speedy service by pleasant staff. Food was delicious. Was much better than trying to find somewhere for fish and chips and then eating in the rain! Would certainly go back.
SPOTLESS, if this place was on the front you wouldn't get in for the queues.Fish and chips were lovely,service is on the button and they have a lift if you don't like stairs,like chip cafes used to be,definitely going again.Gluten free options as well.

The food makes or breaks a chippy. Here, it was amazing, and plenty of it too. I had a large fish and chips with gravy on the side, and they weren't kidding about the "large" part! The restaurant was busy but the service was swift (yet it did not feel rushed). I asked for tap water which was served in a bottle, free of charge. Being Yorkshire water, it was lovely.
The fish was massive, the batter was crispy but not too thick, and the chips were done to perfection. I barely managed to finish my meal. Throughout, the staff were all smiling and chatting with each other, adding to the friendly atmosphere, but it was clear they were not being distracted. They were at stations such that at least two of them could see every part of the restaurant and respond immediately, an extremely professional operation.
And for all this, my bill came to well under £15. I feel it is an understatement to say that I would recommend this restaurant and I'll definitely be back the next time I come to Scarborough!
Polite, nice entry, and served quickly. I had a challenge to get train in a hour which was fulfilled by keen lovely staff! It's reasonable, the food is excellent chios just as they should be, the fish is fresh as a daisy and the batter is gorgeous, final lap was an old school peach Melba-recommendex Well done ladies, I shall return at a more leisurely pace.
Pensioners special is very filling, 3 course with prawn salad starter, fish and chips, tea, bread and butter rounded off with a peach melba, delicious and all for £14 each. Lovely friendly service...can highly recommend.
Great staff great fish and chips. I live in Europe and we don't get this.... first visit back to UK in 8 years and it was worth the wait.
Lovely food at such a good price. Senior citizens deal is amazing. Can't fault the place.
