Fantastic coffee with real subtle flavours and a range of options depending on the type of coffee you are getting or to suit your own taste. The staff are friendly and the interior is very bright and funky. All you could want from a petite and cozy coffee shop.
Seating is limited but there are a small number of seats available so if you are looking for a seat, best to go early in the morning or later in the day

Fortitude is one of Edinburgh's best coffee shops. They offer truly excellent espresso, kalita wave pour-over and aeropress. Workshop Coffee is on offer plus plenty of tasty guests to have in or take beans home. Plus they have some brew and related coffee gear!

Oddly, one of the things I really liked about Fortitude was the ergonomically-rounded lid on my takeaway cup, which I can't say I've noticed anywhere else - all the easier to sip my smooth and perfectly-made latte (though at £2.60 it cost a teeny bit more than I like to pay).
But it's a cool little place and if I ever sit in (possibly with one of the enticing cakes) I look forward to doodling with the little pencils and pads sitting on all of the tables...

All Round Greatness. On the corner of York Place, this new coffee shop has all the bases covered. Through the door and the décor is simple and classy. It's also fresh and bright due to the large front windows and whitewashed walls. There are pastries, scones and soup available, all sourced from top notch local suppliers. The range of teas and coffees on offer have been selected with care and the latte I sampled (Climpson & Sons) was exceptional and the equal of any I've tried in Edinburgh. Well worth a visit and recommended.

Good enough to convert somebody who only liked the smell of coffee into somebody who now loves coffee, quite the achievement...

I’m addicted to coffee.

I tried to come off it once and everything went a little Trainspotting/Snow White, I became incredibly grumpy and sleepy. The break didn’t last long and I was soon back up to my normal consumption, however I vowed to make this addiction worthwhile and enjoy more that just instant coffee.

Although I invested in a French Press I was never able to replicate the taste of fresh coffee from one of Edinburgh’s many coffee shops. We’ll continue to brew at home but will also be sipping our way around Edinburgh learning more about coffee – and it appears there’s a lot to learn!

Fortitude coffee is the latest addition to the caffeine scene, located next door to The Stand in New Town.

Our review couldn’t be based on coffee alone (the excuses you have to make to eat cake!), especially with those brownies being in such close proximity.

We took our brownie over to our bench and had a nibble prior to the coffee arriving, within seconds we had somehow eaten the majority of our tasty treat, even before documenting it for the blog.

The coffee arrived and we resisted temptation to order a fresh brownie to go along with it, this was a difficult task as the incredibly gooey treat had impressed team EB and left us wanting more. The coffee was superb, rich and creamy with a subtle sweetness.

Fortitude is going to be buzzing around the Fringe and rightly so, the relaxed atmosphere, great tunes and awesome coffee is a recipe for success. We’ll certainly be back and may well pick up a bag of the Workshop coffee for EdinBlogger HQ.

I love having a 'boutique' coffee shop on the East side. It's so nice not having to trek across town for a good cup of coffee.

It's true that if they pared this place back any further you'd be sitting on upturned crates but I like the minimalistic 'no fuss, no muss' look which is 'oh so trendy right now'.

It's a coffee shop, they sell fantastic coffee. 'Nuff said.

Caught between the Gothic revivalist edifice of the National Portrait Gallery and the Playdays revivalist palette of The Stand Comedy Club, Fortitude is a small coffee house which is easy to miss. Popping in after a meeting on that side of town, I was instantly struck by the oaky minimalism of the interior, all herringbone floor, boxy shelves and small uncushioned seats, which put you in mind of a 1950s primary school less the latent threat of a caning.

On this occasion I was only in pursuit of a quick coffee, so desultory comments on the lovely lightness of the room resulting from its south facing aspect aside, I can simply confirm that the flat white is truly excellent. Sometimes the smoothness brought by the milk comes at fatal cost of flavour, but this one had deep roasted taste bursting out, as well as the requisite creaminess. The texture was also spot-on according to my velveteen preference.

With those beans to go on, on the many occasions that I pass through this part of town, it'll be the first place I think of for a good cup, and the next place I think of when I want a cup made by people who clearly know what they're doing.

Now you’ll probably see that from our blog we do like a cup of coffee! Mr Edinburger likes coffee much more than I do but I am partial to a good cup now and again. When an email popped into our inbox from Helen and Matt at Fortitude Coffee, we couldn’t resist stopping by.

Fortitude Coffee is situated just on York Place between the National Portrait Gallery and The Stand so it is in good company.

One of the best coffee shops in Edinburgh. Small and perfectly formed! The staff are very knowledgeable of their coffee and very friendly. It’s a serene place to watch the world go by or indulge in a book while drinking delightfully good coffee. Beautiful building with lots of natural light — making the absolute best of classic Edinburgh townhouse architecture.

I came back in early March 2023 and I could not be happier. The staff was very kind, professional and helpful. I asked a few questions about coffee (types and ways of making it) and I learned a few interesting things. Fortitude Coffee is a great place to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee with a yummy piece of cake. I would return to read, work, and meet some friends. Shortly, highly recommended!

This coffee shop is quite small, seats 12 inside. The coffee is to die for, so yummy. I had a morning bun, and it was so indulgent, crispy and flaky. Will try some more pastry next time for sure. The staff was also very friendly.

Petite and perfect unless steps are a challenge for you as there's no other way up. The centre of town feels dominated by huge franchise coffee shops but look around and you'll find indie darlings like Fortitude. I know there are now several Fortitude cafes but it feels and acts indie to me. I ventured up those stairs because Fortitude was taking part in the charity 358 rally of local eateries and I wanted to support. I also wanted power for my tech and was pleased to see some small one and two people tables inside and some power outlets. A friendly greeting welcomed me inside, my order swiftly taken, table wiped clear and I was comfortable. The coffee arrived slightly later and was delicious. I didn't try and food and I think there's light baking and lunch on offer but, gosh, that coffee. Friendly staff make a difference but Tell Friends About It coffee is a delight. The presentation was delightful too. A petite mug, no handle, of near perfect brew. The lack of a coffee mug handle may be a safety and accessibility challenge to some, so please take note, but for my arthritis it's a blessing. It means I can wrap my hands comfortably around the cup. You can buy bags of beans here, and I wish I had. I thought I was at carrying capacity at the time but regret being so timid. Oh well, that's an excuse to go back even though this York Place corner is a little off my usual beaten path.

Great service, good coffee, great food, my girlfriend insists it's the best pain au chocolat she's ever had, beating out what she's had in Paris (ノ゚0゚)ノ~

If you're looking for some specialty coffee in edinburgh, then this is your spot. There's 3 locations which if you're a tourist you will visit both while wandering around for sure. Great filter coffee options and some tasty espresso. Staff is helpful and relaxed as well as the environment inside. Highly recommend grabbing bag of beans to take home.
