The interior of Carriages of Knaresborough is olde and quaint (as befits this small medieval North Yorkshire town). Its segmented dining spaces (outdoors as well as in) give you the sense of being in a cosy room, even though it is – overall – quite a large restaurant. On our visit last night, there were three menus to select from: ~ seafood – two courses @ £24.00 ~ a la carte – two courses @ £24.00 ~ tapas Amuse bouche – smoked guineau fowl taster We ordered a bottle of Foxwood Viognier dry white wine @ £22.50 and a Crianza red @ £23.00 while reading the menu options, and were served an amuse bouche (‘mouth amuser’, a bite-sized hors d’œuvre compliments of the chef) of smoked guinea fowl (beautifully presented on a slate but too smoked and richly intense to be really enjoyable) and a basket of breads. Scallops + pulled pork starter Whitby crab with poppadum starter Setting aside the tapas menu, we all ordered two courses @ £24.00 from the seafood menu...
Went for Sunday dinner and the food was great, staff are really friendly and the prices are fair. Inside seating is quite cosy and comfortable. We also had dessert, which was nice.
Nice little spot with staff who are very helpful. We went with a big party and think we pushed them to their limits with the amount of servings they could do at once. But they did well and the food came out in a decent amount of time. It seemed to be all freshly prepared and tasted really good. The veggies were a little different with nice sweet carrots and parsnips. The cut of pork was different to what you often get and one I much preferred, possibly belly with some great flavour. One pork was a bit dry but others were good.
We sat out the back which was a nice area that had the train station over the back so the kids got very excited every time a train pulled up which was nice. The dogs enjoyed themselves as well. All in all a very nice experience.
Just had the best Sunday lunch here! I have always been disappointed if eating out for Sunday lunch, and end up wish I'd made my own, until today! Really fresh, served hot, lovely taste gravey, it was delicious 😋 only down side, I was too full for dessert! I had the vegetarian option (butternut squash and beetroot Wellington) and husband had the farm yard (pork, beef and chicken). Would definitely recommend.
Had the best Sunday Roast here, absolutely delicious and huge portions, really couldn’t fault it! Lovely staff and service, highly recommend if in the area. Our dog was very welcome too. We loved it!
That was probably the best meal I had in the area, service is great and friendly, food was absolutely gorgeous from A to Z, can’t fault anything.
Had 2 starters : chorizo and arancini 10/10
2 sandwiches : chicken and steak 10/10, salad dressing gorgeous, fries great and sandwiches perfect.
Can’t fault it.
Good wine by the glass
It’s perfect with a perfect outside area with a good view, I’ll be back soon.
We got off the train at Knaresborough and wanted a warm cosy place to eat. This pub is just up the road from the station, it was open and had a fire going! Perfect. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was delicious 😋 thanks
Me and my daughter went to have some food here. I scoped it out by pictures on Google before we went. I do that because how else I'll know what to order.
I had a good wage coming in this month so I thought to go and treat our selves.
Staff was very nice and we took the seats outside right over the trainline. Wish there hadn't been a strike. Would have been a cool view at the trains going underneath.
Food was great. I was jealous of my daughters burger. It was amazing. Chips vere out of this world.
We had to leave earlier than I wanted because of wasps.. But there is nothing that staff could have done about it.
Oh and the portions are very well sized. I eat a lot and I wasn't disappointed at all at mine or hers.
Definitely would come back again.
Had an amazing anniversary dinner here, my boyfriend ordered the katsu curry and I ordered the Seabass, both were absolutely delicious!
Staff are really lovely and a really nice atmosphere.
Had an amazing lunch of slow roasted ox cheek and potatoes and veg with pineapple and baked ice cream for dessert. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever tasted. We will be back thank you for the excellent service and friendly warm welcome.
We've been to Carriages quite a few times in the past, but this was our first time at The Bear at Carriages after its renovation. It's a lovely bar and restaurant and they now have a fantastic outdoor seating area with covers and heaters, and an outdoor grill. The staff were great and service was good. The passion fruit martinis were delicious! The food was really good too. I had the seafood chowder which had large prawns and lots of fish. It was creamy and filling. The rest of our table had broccoli tempura, karaage chicken, and a couple of the specials of the day. The desserts we tried (sticky toffee pudding and chocolate tart) were really tasty too. I'd absolutely recommend trying this place.
