Gene's Carry-out Restaurant

I've been to Genes chicken well over 100 times easily. Used to live right next to the place. Try the beef roll, great pizza that will beat any upper Midwest pizzeria hands down. The fried chicken is epic. They also do a family fried chicken meal. So if you come to the largest county fair in Illinois the Sandwich Fair the first Wed thru Sunday Labor Day week you have to check this place out. It's only an hour drive or 60 miles due west of Chicago or 70 miles south of Rockford.

Love this place. Best beef rolls ever. I worked here when I was 17 For 2 years - 18 years ago (yikes). The owner not only taught me good work ethic but also that as an owner of an establishment, to never be too proud to do any and all tasks you ask your staff to do. I now own my own business in another state far away and remember what I learned long ago with my own staff. When I come back to visit my family I always look forward to stoping by for my favorite Sandwich IL food - A Gene’s beef roll with extra crispy French fries (one of the few places that actually makes them extra crispy when I ask).

If I could give 0 stars...I would. We have been going to Gene’s for quite a few years, and the pizza and service has been good. For the first time, in 5 years, we decided to try something new; the deep dish pizza. We ordered 2 16-inch deep dish pizzas, in which we found 2 hairs! I called Gene’s right away and told them. The owner got on the phone and I told him the issue; he literally laughed at me. He told me that he could not refund our credit card because they ‘don’t know how’. They offered to make us another pizza (we waited 45 min prior to picking up our pizza due to deep dish), and I said no. We will never order from here again, and not because of the hair we found in our food, but due to the lack of customer service and care.

We tried out Gene's after my sister's play at the high school and I was pleasantly surprised. It may not look like too much from the outside but we ordered a family order of the fried chicken, 2 beef rolls, a small pepperoni pizza, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and onion rings. The fried chicken was so fresh, hot, crispy, and delicious! The pizza was also very good, but I didn't care too much for the beef rolls. The beef itself was a little dried out. The sides were all god as well and the prices weren't bad at all. The service was pretty good, too, nothing outstanding or terrible. The chicken, though, made the visit worth the while! I'll definitely be back!

I was new in town and didn’t know what to order or how the portion size went so I asked the cook and the cook was very rude and got angry because I was asking questions about how things were done there! I called right back to cancel an order of wings because too many were ordered and he got mad cancelled my whole order and hung up on me. That was very terrible customer service and I will never ever spend my money at a place like that!! At least I called right back not even 2 mins had gone by to correct a mistake and not waste food that I wasn’t going to pay for!
