Interesting restaurant al based around its own amazing history and set up like a war time cafe. We had the Goats Cheese and veg pie and the chicken leek pie which were both delicious. Big servings and very filling and a good price too. I’d definitely recommend a visit here as the food was great. Only marked it down as the young lad serving dis-interested and bored and came across as quite rude.
Went to Whitby for the day and had decided to go here before we set off as my partner had been before.
Turned up, one table free and the waiter made it suit the 3 of us.
Ordered and food arrived quickly.
We all had pie, mash and peas.
My creamy chicken and leek pie was very good, really tasty.
I have been to other 1940s cafes and would say this one lacks a bit of 1940s atmosphere, very basic decor.
Would definitely go back though.
wonderful little place! quite small so we had to wait outside for a moment to be seated but not for very long, and we served quite soon after sitting. we got the roast veg & goats cheese pie, and the steak & ale pie, both with garden peas (you get a choice of garden or mushy!). both absolutely delicious and nice big portion sizes. loved the atmosphere as well, really cosy 1940s vibe with period music playing!
The wife and I ate here on the 20th Oct '23, which was a VERY wet day. 1st off, the log fire was a god send. It was nice n cosy, thawed us out a bit and dried our jackets.
The server was polite, and the service was pretty quick.
I had chicken, bacon and mushroom and my wife had steak n kidney. They were both home made and very very good. Reccommended
Beautiful food and the service was fantastic, even with some customers demanding seats from the poor waiter. Would have liked to see vegan mash or chips as an option for my wife hence the 4 stars. If vegan, please bear this in mind as you pay full price even though you get no mash.
Wanted to try this last year but it was closed, made a point of visiting again this year while it was open. It’s a gorgeous little place with lots of 40’s memorabilia and artefacts to take you back to the good old days!
I had the steak & ale pie and my husband had the chicken & bacon pie, both were absolutely delicious, definitely homemade as stated as was the mashed potato and mushy peas! We also had the jam roly poly & custard (to share as it was a large portion!) again this was delicious and took me back to childhood memories of my favourite suet school puddings!
It is only small inside but a very busy little place with one table leaving and another group waiting to be seated.
My only thought was I would have liked my food to have been a bit warmer, it was just about warm enough for me to not mention it but may not be for others, again only a small issue.
Service was brilliant, we did have to wait, but understandably, as it was busy with only 1 staff member but we were well looked after and wouldn’t hesitate to return!
Fantastic place to have lunch or dinner. Humble pie is the name but the taste is pure perfection. Homemade in every way. This food warmed my heart and mind. Had the mince beef pie as takeaway and it was simply delicious. Easy to order online. Pastry, flavour and look is just as it should be. Mash was delicious too. Maybe portions could be slightly bigger, then again could be just me being little greedy and of course one has more room for dessert 😄 Warm recommendation !
The guy who served us was a little unbothered and dry, but the experience was otherwise really pleasant. No fuss and no frills, delicious pie and mash. Good selection of pies including a vegan one, traditional steamed puddings looked great but we didn't stay for one. Nice to go somewhere who just do one thing and do it well. Nice decor as well in keeping with the vibe. Can imagine foreign tourists having a lovely and authentic time here.
Amazing service from a young man there. Polite, helpful and an absolute great person. I felt amazing being sat inside and was speedy. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! absolutely so homely feeling and beautifully made. I felt like my grandmother just made me one of her most delicious meals! And it was SO CHEAP!!!!!! The only down side is that I can't go EVERY DAY because I'm going to miss this place! Honestly the best food in Whitby!
Gem of a restaurant in the heart of Whitby. The food here is wholesome and delicious, whilst its charming atmosphere makes this place a perfect location for a romantic meal for two.
A glass of milk and dessert is a must!
