A popular veggie-vegan spot in York
The Goji Café is a popular café and takeaway, and rightly so: it’s a great place to eat. It serves a reasonable selection of soups, starters, salads, mains, desserts and cakes alongside a good range of coffees, teas and other drinks. Many of the dishes are vegan, or can be adapted to be vegan-friendly. There are gluten-free options, too, but more choice would be good.
I don’t get the chance to visit often, but when I do, I like anything vegan on their menu which comes with roast potatoes. You can’t go wrong with a roast potato, but you could also try their tasty sweet-potato wedges. Their home-made desserts and cakes usually include plenty of vegan choices and are delicious. If there’s a vegan cheesecake on the menu, I can’t resist it. Not cheap, because of lots of expensive ingredients, but indulgent and gorgeous! Their other cakes are yummy, too. On the whole, the menu is good, but, even though I don’t visit often, it seems samey and just aimed at a student market. Would like much more variety, please, for all customers and more hot veg. But overall, the place is a gem.
For me, the huge downside is the building: there is a small dining room downstairs (and small courtyard) and another dining room on the first floor, but the loo is on the top floor: up a beautiful, but horribly-steep, old staircase. The place is virtually inaccessible for wheelchair users and many other disabled people. A move to a better place, with a downstairs loo, is long overdue. The waiting-staff work incredibly hard, dashing up and down lots of stairs all day long. And still serve with a smile!
Not a cheap place to eat, but it’s in the middle of an expensive city, so the prices will have to reflect their overheads.
Goji is an absolute hidden gem .. and well worth seeking out. I always go there when I visit York, I have a vegan lunch (usually mushroom tofu burger .. which is delicious) and get some vegan cakes to go! Their savoury food is outstanding, and their vegan cakes are out of this world. The staff are always friendly, helpful and welcoming. The place is delightfully quirky and warm. I highly recommend going .. and it's worth waiting for a table if there are none available (as you cannot book a table)
This vegetarian deli style cafe offers a range of menu items including soups, salads, quiche (vegan as well) and snacks.
The food we ordered was quite nice. I personally enjoyed the falafels, tabouli and the sweet potato borek. The sample cake with cardamom and other spices we tried upon arrival was also really nice.
We arrived at a busy time of day, towards the end of their lunch service, meaning that our order got confused twice and they ran out of a few things we wanted to try but it wasn't too much of an issue. The staff were otherwise very friendly and checked regularly to ensure everything was going well and we were enjoying our meal
The specials menu outside Goji Cafe caught my eye so I headed inside for lunch. Goji is a lovely vegetarian and vegan deli and cafe with seating inside and a sunny courtyard out the back.
I stopped by here to take away as I was pretty short of time! But the food looked so good it was hard to decide, I was a bit gutted I hadn't allowed time to get a salad because there selection of salads looked absolutely INCREDIBLE!! Anyways I took a piece of their vegan quiche which was made with cashew cream and the pastry on it was perfectly crumbly and crisp and the flavours were so GOOD!! And then I struggled to choose which cake I wanted but I went for the pistachio rose sponge. It had a gorgeous texture and the icing was super yummy and the right ratio of cake to icing too! Id highly recommend.
We went for a weekday lunch after several recommendations. The beetroot and onion tart was really rich and tasty, the salads all lush (carrot and butterbean in a garlic rosemary dressing was amazinggg). Coffee great, tried the cafeteria and soy cappuccino. The pistachio cake was delightful and the vegan scones a rare treat too. Can’t wait to visit York again so I can sample some more plant based deliciousness.
Great selection of food at this York institution. Friendly staff albeit a bit chaotic and chatty with themselves so full attention wasn’t on their work. This showed at times. Soup was not warm and it took a long time to be served after ordering.
Had to wait 15 minutes or so, to get a table. I would have waited longer if necessary, as soon as I tasted the food, I knew why it was so popular!!
The staff were very friendly, and the building had an extremely homely atmosphere!
The mushroom burger, and sweet potato wedges were delightful! I can only recommend this place👌💯
My fourth visit here - I had their salad platter with halloumi. Lentil avocado rocket salad and spiced cauli salad were excellent. Portion of halloumi seemed a little small but I was full afterwards so perhaps that was wise?!
Smoothie was tasty - an orangey mangoey one this time but I’ve also had a good green smoothie here.
My sister had the cashew cream tart (also had caramelised onions in) which was absolutely delicious! Nice atmosphere, always busy so on this occasion we got the slightly draughty table.
We've been to Goji a couple of times when we've visited York. The food is always varied, interesting, tasty and so enjoyable.
Staff are welcoming and attentive, and obviously enjoy what they do. Would highly recommend Goji for all, regardless of whether you're a veggie or vegan!
I have been here a couple of times and it is no on my 'go to' list of places. The food is amazing, full of flavour, freshly prepared and with many great choices available. The menu changes so there are always specials available. The selection of salads are amazing too... really hard to decide which to have or rather which to leave out!
The service is wonderful. Very friendly staff who can give helpful recommendations and make you feel very welcome and unhurried.
Great range of drinks too and I loved the flowering teas.
Definitely worth a visit, even if its to grab a take out!
Excellent value for money.
In York for the day Christmas shopping and not sure where to eat, we found this great little cafe in the heart of York serving a good selection of vegan and vegetarian food.Plenty of tables and a good atmosphere.Friendly knowledgeble staff. Both had the vegan all day breakfast. Would recommend if you are visiting York, also great selection of vegan cake's.
Great cafe, good food, good drinks, good service, friendly staff. Only negative was it was a bit on the expensive side. There is a small outdoor private area at the rear that is nice to sit in. It's enclosed by brick walls, so it's quiet and sheltered. Good selection of gluten free cakes. Wise selection of teas, including flowering teas. Would definitely recommend.
The place is very cozy and the staff is nice.
Portions are great and I loved their rich and filling side salads. Prices are good too! Great choice both for lunch or snack/tea time (cakes looks and tastes amazing)
