Great food, Amazing service!! Plus good location!
I visited to this cafe twice during my trip in Edinburgh.
At first all staffs were kind and friendly.
I highly recommend the cream tea!
Scones were so good đ
And the cream wasnât typical one I used to have in London, it looked homemade and fresh.

Really enjoyed breakfast here. Waited outside with others until it opened at 9.30. I would say it was full within 30 minutes. When we left there was a big queue to get in. We only had granola and porridge but both were delicious and hit the spot. Friendly service, would recommend

What a gem!!! Absolutely lovely food! The place is adorable and the staff is so friendly. We had soup, toasties, cakesâŠit was all amazing. We also had sconesâŠ.the best ones I have ever had. We will be back again. They have tables outside so lovely to take my dog.

A highlight in my short stay in Edinburgh. One of the best scones I ever had. The atmosphere is great with a lovely service and nice people. I of course recommend the Cream tea set but there are also many other great dishes.

Very good place to get some eats. Traditional Scottish breakfast was good for my first time. As an American, I don't care for it on the whole, but I did enjoy everything on the plate. I likely won't order again on this trip just because it's not my thing. Very reasonably priced. The ham and cheese toastie was bland. Otherwise, I'd have given 5 overall stars. The Biscoff cheese cake was the absolute highlight. Perfect flavor and perfect consistency. Don't miss out on ordering one!

Beautiful cafe tucked into An alley. Had sandwiches and a quiche. Sandwiches were good, but could have used more meat in them. One slice was not enough.

I loved Deacon's House Cafe. Stopped for breakfast because they offer porridge...and it was wonderfully delicious and better than expected. I chose the porridge with red fruits-- red raspberries, red currants, and blueberries--and it was only slightly sweet and with the fruit required no additional sweetener. Another option will be porridge with bananas and chocolate chips when I return! The mocha was delicious and very chocolatey, so keep that in mind.

Delicious Scottish breakfast. Arrived about 20 minutes after they opened on a Sunday morning, and although the inside seating was busy, there was no one sitting outside. Food was delivered quickly.

Wonderful staff, delicious food! The potato leek soup was scrumptious, but the highlight was definitely the fresh out of the oven scone with Nutella added đ

Best scottish breakfast in town!
We really enjoyed our breakfast, good product and really well done!
Salmon, scones with lots of flavours and toppings, and one of the best or probably the best capuccino I've ever tried!
Service is amazing and the place is really nice, smell history everywhere!

It's a small cafe.
But there are many customers, and the atmosphere is good.
I heard that scones are especially good, but I didn't feel like they were really good.
It's a historical place, but I don't know what it's about.

Nice place, food is great, recommend Scons.
Interior lighting need to be improved, lights should all warm.

If you walk The Royal Mile, you will find hidden places where you can breathe elegance and history. This small business is one of them. It has an indoor and outdoor area, both have a great atmosphere. The cold and rainy weather makes you crave something hot, which they provide you with super authentic and exquisite presentation. One of the best cappuccinos I've ever had! You can tell that the love with which they do it makes a difference.

Cute little place. Friendly staff, good service. I had the Scrambled eggs with bacon and the eggs were a little bland for my taste. I did have a croissant with jam that was spot on, however, and the flat white was the best I had in Edinburgh. Would go back when Iâm here again.

Had a lovely lunch here. Had to wait 10 minutes for an inside seat but we donât mind the wait as itâs always delicious and cosy here. I had a lovely leek and potato soup which was thick and creamy and then one of the best scones with cream and strawberry jam that Iâve ever had. I love the wall paintings which tell the story and the tearoom vibes.

A lovely little cafe, they squeezed me in even though it was busy. All the staff were incredibly attentive. I overheard one of them very clearly explaining the gluten free options to another table. The tuna and cheese ciabbatta was great, with high quality bread (tasted homemade?!). Only slight problem for me was too much dressing on the salad, I wouldâve preferred less and maybe a tomato/slice of cucumberâŠ
Coffee excellent.

We had the pleasure of having breakfast here whilst on holidays. The menu has good healthy choices and reasonable prices. Tasty food and great coffee. The staff were happy, helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. There are toilets available across the path way outside. Warm and cosy atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend â€ïž

The food was amazing! We ordered several dishes and every single one was really tastefull. You do have to self order, but the staff brings it to your table. Also the cakes looked very good, but we were stuffed with no more room for cake.

This place has a great history behind it, and the inspiration behind RL Stevensen's novel on Deacon Brodie. And the food was to our liking. So why not go here and sit in the history of a nasty man...
Eton's Mess
The friendly team provide fast service and the location and ambience make this a worthwhile spot to enjoy lunch. The scotch broth does not disappoint :-)

This cafe has the very best scones, jam, Devonshire cream, and tea at incredibly affordable prices. The shortbread is AMAZING! I wish we had places like this in the states. Once we discovered this cafe we were here every afternoon. It is very close to the castle. It's a wonderful place to relax. DO NOT MISS IT!

It's not big and it's not terribly fancy but it does have charm. The narrow laneways and stonework make this place all the more interesting. This place was fair - not bad but not spectacular.

Their approach to service needs a complete overhaul, as the days of their truculent attitude being in any way acceptable have long since passed
Lunch Quest
In all of my quests, one thing that has really impressed me is the general lack of truly ghastly tourist traps that Iâve come across. Sure, there are places that charge a bit more given their location, but generally I havenât come across many places that are really taking the mickey. But thenâŠ

Capturing passing trade with the jaunty figure of Deacon Brodie at the entrance to the pend down which the cafe is located, the Deaconâs House CafĂ© is in a prime location on the Royal Mile. The cafĂ© room is full of historic splendour. Sadly, the fare on offer is decidedly underwhelming.

Their menu features homemade soup, which can be matched with a sandwich in their lunchtime deal. I misread the menu and tried to match a toastie, priced the same as the sandwiches, and was brusquely told that this was not possible. This is probably the point at which I should have turned tail and left.

Their homemade mushroom soup looked promising, but was under-seasoned and insipid. It was rather disappointing.

The toastie was unceremoniously thrown down on my table, without a word, smile or attempt at eye contact. It was entirely characterless. The salad with which it was served featured some very tired brown iceberg. It was woefully poor.

So overall, the Deaconâs House can be summed up in just one word: avoid. Their approach to service needs a complete overhaul, as the days of their truculent attitude being in any way acceptable have long since passed. Their food is rather poor, too. I feel sorry for tourists who alight upon this place, and would strongly encourage you to walk past it and chose somewhere else.

Scores
Blythe scores the Deaconâs House
1.5/5 for food
2/5 for presentation
4/5 for setting
1/5 for service
giving an overall 8.5/20

I ate: mushroom soup; cheese and ham toastie

I wore: an unimpressed look

Total bill: ÂŁ8.45
