I became a regular there during the five days of my stay in Edinburgh. The place bewitched us, we got addicted. Every member of the staff is super professional: they respect the customer, have a great sense of humour, they are super friendly, and they create an amazing, cozy atmosphere. I loved the food. Their fish&chips is extraordinary, their signature burger is delicious, just like the beef stew. AND the cocktails!!! Best taste, quality and value.

A fantastic bar - with both a great beer selection but also tasty food, and good cocktails.
Mostly keg beers - craft beer. Not a huge place. The smoked meats are cracking.

This place was on my list for ages. I’m so happy I finally got to experience their food and their beers. Very good prices and such nice flavours, the spare ribs were melting in our mouths. I love how with the burger they include fries, most place charge extra!
Will come again for sure.

Lovely and cozy pub with a selection of craft beers, some of which are also from cask. Beers are a bit on the pricey side and drinks have to be ordered at the bar. Food is okay but nothing out of the ordinary. Loved that place.

Loved the session pale ale I tried, pricey but worth it. Has a variety of beers from different breweries. Atmosphere and service are great. Will go back to try the food and the cocktails.

Very lovely staff. Pretty good knowledge of whisky.
The large nachos are extremely large and very good. The haggis taste good and the hot god as well. Definitely recommend it hear. It’s also not to loud as other places.

Great selection of beers; everything from sours, stouts and porters to pale ales. Friendly staff and vegan- and allergy-friendly menu. The kitchen accommodated my girlfriend's egg and milk-protein allergies with no issues. The Nachos with vegan cheese was delicious.

Such a fun quirky bar! Great selection of beers and cocktails! The food was very tasty, lots to choose from so we got a bunch of sides and they actually serve food until midnight! Brilliant atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit!

It just so good. The selection of beers on cask and keg are amazing, not to be missed...then you dive into the fridges, lots of different bottles and styles of beers here...stoked 😁 Very refreshing to find a bar not flooded with just IPA's. Beer is an education and this is a very good school👍🏽

A great bar / cocktail bar. Fantastic atmosphere and very trendy styling. Excellent range of draft craft beers which change regularly, but this is much more than al beer house. There is a good range of cocktails too, which is great because that invites a very different crowd from the typical bearded beanie hat wearing craft beer aficionado. Food is typical bar fare - sandwiches, burgers, wings - but made with care and at a better level than most. Someone has put a lot of thought into this place.

Used to go here when working in Edinburgh, took my wife during a xmas visit, she loved it and we went 3 times on the way back to your hotel. Super chilled out place with interesting beer. Smashing experience.

Fun lively bar! Good selection of drinks, bottled and tap, friendly staff, nice little establishment. The people I was with were asked to keep it down, can't remember why, but it was fair enough. I imagine it gets busy at Halloween...

I can't believe I haven't done a review for The Hanging Bat yet! I adore this place! The beer selection is always great and everyone can pick their favourite kind of beer. For those who haven't been yet, The Hanging Bat has around 15 different beers on tap and these change every day. The only downside is that they sometimes run out of the "special" lager and they make me experiment with my beer taste. Which is after all not a bad thing! The beers are served "Belgium" style which means they come in smaller glasses. So be prepared you won't get a pint! I had a caesar salad here in the past which was great but yesterday I ordered the pulled pork nachos which were amazing! Probably the best nachos I've ever had! The meat was juicy and tender and it came with melted cheese and salsa mixed under the meat. It came with fresh coriander on the top which was a nice touch. It can get pretty crowded some days but there is quite a lot of tables. The service is always helpful and yesterday they gave me two beers to try first before I ordered one. Definitely recommend for all the beer lovers that want to chat in a nice pub with great food!

I really like the Hanging Bat. Its a proper beer pub without being 'old man style'. Despite not being a big beer drinker I love that you can try 1/3 pints of different lagers and beers (or smaller amounts) to see what kinds of beer you like. The staff are very friendly and really knowledgeable about the beers. There is also a big selection of bottled beer and fruit beers too. The best thing is that when you dont fancy any more beer they have a huge selection of spirits, namely gin and are happy to recommend many options to taste. Plus the food is great, Hot dogs (the proper kind), pulled pork (love!), mac and cheese and great salad and sides too. A proper good boozer

Good selection of rotational beers & large selection of gin. This is definitely a go-to for me in this part of town and I usually bring any out of town visitors who are beer-heads. Can get really busy so be prepared to wait on a Friday evening etc. The food is a bit hit and miss but suffices for posh pub grub.

Probably the best place for beer in Edinburgh, it is easy to understand why it's packed most of the time. The Hanging Bat has a great atmosphere and a fantastic selection of beers... and cider (which I always favour, not being a beer fan myself). If you want to be able to grab a table, go there early.

Great selection of craft beers! Probably the best in Edinburgh!
They do a great job of the food too!

while the notion of home-smoking meat products is one that appeals to me, greatly, the Hanging Bat has a little way to go to make their offerings truly sing
The Spartacan Pub Review
Oh, now we’re talking. Head and shoulders above anywhere else around Lothian Road - and no discredit to the competition - the Hanging Bat is a beer cafe (I’d just say a very distinguished pub, in truth) with 20 cask and keg taps and hundreds of bottled beers backing them up.

The owners have created a dim and trendily homely space on two levels with a long bar along the left as you come in. Go on a Friday or Saturday night and you’ll see the following they’ve established - a following enjoying quality beers constantly on rotation, a relaxed atmosphere, and an unpretentious attitude toward good service.

Even though the taps change frequently, look out for the Tempest Rye IPA, a pearl of an IPA brewed in the Borders, anything by Derbyshire’s Thornbridge brewery, and a personal favourite of ours, Camden Ink Stout.

The best place for beer in Edinburgh (closely followed by Brewdog) is The Hanging Bat on Lothian Road. Beers are dispensed from bat shaped taps, they brew their own beer on site and bring in fantastic brews from all over, and the food isn't half bad either. Prices are a little steep but no more than any other craft beer hangout. And if you get bored, there's always Cloisters, Brauhaus, Red Squirrel and more nearby. Highly recommended.

A great little haunt for a beer fanatic, the choice of beers is exemplary and you can spend a few hours just on the beer alone.

But then there is the food, which is better than standard pub grub, it is very well crafted. They are also generous with their portions, something which weights heavily in their favour. The personal favourite of mine is the Alsatian Hot Dog, the succulent meat is to die for. The pulled pork burger and the stew are also up there. It is a great place to go to meet friends, it has everything - good beer, good food and knowledgable staff.

I went here on Saturday for a few drinks after the rugby. I thought the ambience was really nice and the decor lovely! I'm not sure when this changed hands from my old student days but it is so much better. The variety of beers was good (for my male friends) and some certainly proved popular and they kept rubbing different ones off the chalk boards when they sold out, so they must have been good! It was busy which is understandable for being a rugby Saturday night, but I would definitely like to go back and go for lunch as the food going past being served to others looked so well displayed and yummy!

If it's quality cask ales you're after, and plenty of it, then the Hanging Bat on Lothian Street is well worth a punt. Busy most nights with a clientèle that would run a mile at the mention of fizzy beer, this drinkers paradise features over 100 bottled beers and up to 10 draught lines, each serving something unique and new to the palette.
Quietly unassuming from the front, once inside you are presented with a spacious yet intimate setting which feels modern, yet still houses the character to whittle off one of the best beer selections in Edinburgh. The bar and flooring is decked out with rustic wood whilst the heavy tables allow weight for even the fullest of glasses. There's a chalk board which features the latest offering from both cask and keg while the studded, leather sofas allow for easy access to recline when you've had your fill.
It gets busy but never feels overly packed and the large bar with efficient and knowledgeable staff make the process of ordering a swift one all the more swift.
The beer menu features a range of delights, from dark, full bodied ales to light and hoppy blondes and session beers. There's also a good stock of wheat beers to sample and enough Belgium beer to sink a battle liner. But pay close attention to the alcohol percentage of whatever you're drinking as some of these babies pack quite a punch.
You'd think a place with such an emphasis on beer would perhaps take its foot of the gas a little when it comes down to serving food. But the Hanging Bat has a firm grasp on how to serve up a BBQ feast without flooding the place in smoke and burning the sausages to a crisp.
The hot dogs take centre stage here, and rightly so, plus there's a whole host of specials from wings to ribs and pulled pork to beer mac' n' cheese. A takeaway service is also available ensuring you can grab and go on those busy nights.
A great way to try something new and a place that will leave you coming back for more, The Hanging Bat is a sure fire must for beer lovers the world over.
