Very pretty, cozy and pleasant place, with a friendly service. We had an excellent breakfast, French toast and banana bread were delicious. Away from the touristy area, very relaxing, didn’t want to leave. Strongly recommend

I was looking for a brunch place away from city Centre (George street ) and I came across Birchwood randomly as I was browsing google maps. Best discovery!
I cannot talk high enough for the people who run the place. From the call to book to the service during our visit, extremely friendly, polite and helpful!
And when you thing that kindness top of the positive impressions, then... brunch was served! easily ranking top Benny's I have ever got in the city! I was conscious at the start about how spice the sriracha hollandaise would be, but it was very mild and pleasant (highly recommended). Equally very tasty was the avocado toast.
Finally, worth to mention that the coffee is very good as well, the brew is very mild and give you a sense sweetness. Definitely, it is not the "default" strong-bitter brew that the majority of the brunch places serve as usually oversees the importance of good coffee brew.
Highly recommended place and for sure we will be visiting again.
[Parking Note] easy to find parking in a radius of 2-5 mins, but it is with parking meter, the normal Mon-Fri up to 5.30pm, so weekends is for free.

Update: On my second visit, we went early to enjoy our breakfast when it's quiet. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly. My original 5 star review holds.
A cute café with a decent range of tasty snacks and food. They have the usual breakfast dishes one would expect and some unique shakes like coconut milk and honey. They have vegetarian and vegan friendly options too. The staff were friendly and efficient and the inside has a nice easygoing atmosphere. It was quite busy on a Sunday morning which made it really noisy inside but I assume most are used to it. Overall, a great place to have a snack and meet up with friends and family.

Wow! What a great place for brunch.
The food was exquisite, best English breakfast ever and the French toasts were just very good. Very nice staff too! Definitely recommend this place.

During our holiday in Edinburgh, we ended up visiting The Birchwood three mornings in a row as it was so good. The food was fantastic (both tasty and great portions), the service was great, and the ambience was lovely. Would highly recommend!

We dropped by The Birchwood for brunch a few days back. All the dishes we had ordered were very good. The Classic French Toast and Mixed Mushrooms on Sourdough Toast were both delicious. But the chef had clearly outdone himself with the Banana French Toast..a medley of flavours and textures that was the perfect Sunday treat! Service was warm, quick and friendly. A delightful experience!

The Birchwood is a nice homely restaurant at the top of Marchmont Road (at street level) and serves excellent breakfasts. Even if you are not into haggis (there is a vegetarian option) or black pudding (sourced from Stornoway, and reckoned to be the best) the breakfast options are excellent. Top class coffee too. Seating is suitable and flexible for different sizes of (small) groups, The decor broadly follows the former Toast (at the same location) with local quality artwork. Members of staff are attentive, helpful and accommodating.

Very disappointing- and sadly, since it is a local cafe we have always enjoyed as 'toast, we will not be going back. I ordered pancakes, which were solid as roof tiles - still frozen or stale, hard to say. My friend ordered French toast which came as thick, doughy un toasted bread with a thin glaze of burnt egg! Not good, but when I politely drew the waitresses attention to my pancakes- I got the distinct feeling that she was irritated and there was no discernible sign of customer service whatsoever. Long story short - the pancakes were taken off the bill - we paid for the French toast - left no tip and vowed never to go back. Buyer beware - there are many cafes in Marchmont - I'd put this one to the bottom of your list.

Where Toast had traded for a good while, Wild Wood has recently taken over. Looking to plough much the same furrow, with cafe options during the day and more brunchy and restaurant fare at weekends, I thought I’d give it a go on a blustery Sunday evening. Having had a very brisk Sunday, they had run out of a few dishes when I arrived, but I was in the mood for the type of autumnal fare that remained so ordered the pigeon to start, then followed with the beef cheek bourguignon.
