Very friendly and fast service. Good coffee. Nice atmosphere. Croissant was warmed up and served nicely. (Unfortunately it was cheap supermarket product so even warming it up couldn't cover it's not nice taste and texture)

Had coffee and a light snack. Super friendly and fast service. Will definitely be back again.
Place was filled with people but not too busy. It had a good vibe. Seem to attract a lot of locals which is always a good sign.

One of the busiest cafes I've been in, but I can tell why, as the vibe is super chill and eclectic.
I ordered a skinny biscoff latte, but no skimmed milk, unfortunately. I had to go back after ordering and get a chai instead as I couldn't really taste the biscoff. The staff were super nice about it and made me a new drink right away. Prices are very reasonable for the size of cup you get.
Overall, I would come back.

This has got to be my favorite cafe in Edinburgh! I came back thrice during my trip there - love their cakes, especially the vegan range! I'll be visiting soon :)

Hands down one of the best cafes in Edinburgh. The pumpkin spice latte was just perfect and the chicken ciabatta was also nice and filling. The coffee here is what will get me through fourth year chaos🤩

Coffee was good. Got oat milk flat white with a muffin. Loved the atmosphere of the place!

Eclectic vibe and very friendly staff! A bit chart behind the counter but customer service was great! Thanks for the afternoon pick me up after my flight from Atlanta, GA USA

The best cheese and tomato Croissant I have ever had, coffee is really good although the matcha wasn't done properly.
The atmosphere is perfect, I would visit again for sure.

Tasty coffee and healthy hot soup!
Harry Potter wasn't written here as the wooden board on this coffee shop's table (see photo1).
The actual place was the Spoon, a cafe, where is now replaced by the Chinese restaurant (see photo 2)!
There is a monument about J.K. Rowling, it's different from original version tho(see photo 3 and 4).

Love the old, rustic atmosphere of this place. I could sit sipping coffee in of the window seats watching people outside the whole day. They have great options for both hot and cold drinks, and the bakery products are delicious too.

Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and interesting decor. We ordered a raspberry and white chocolate muffin, a smoked salmon bagel, mochas and chocolate shortbread dessert. Mochas were good and the food was decent, though i wish the bagel had more smoked salmon in it. The bagel had just a small thin layer of smoked salmon. A pleasant little cafe though!

Good coffee. One of the place to visit in Edinburgh. Its usually crowded so its better you go accordingly! There is a basement seating area as well which seemed quite nice.

Their coffee is OK. The place is OK. However, I have the feeling it's kind of hipster on purpose and the atmosphere doesn't feel that authentic.

Great light meals, fab coffee and a quirky interior decoration with lots of wood and some native american touches. But beyond its looks, this nice coffee place is perfect for a light lunch and a cuppa, no matter what your plans are. Visited recently for a quick meal and had one of their lovely bagels with goat's cheese, tomatoes, roasted artichokes and red pesto.
It's also a good place to bring a book or your computer to do a bit of working out of the office.

Bustling coffee shop with good selection of food and cakes. Not having wifi is a big let down. surely this is just standard. Homemade lemonade was a bit gross. whoever thought outting a whole load of grated lemon peel in the bottom of the glass was a good idea... mars bar cake was a winner though so pick your poison.

Gone for a catch up with a couple of friends to meet someone we haven't seen for 6 years! Lovely warm and cosy cafe with a menu full of tasty food and drinks! Went for the Pesto Melt and Nutella Shake and they were delicious!

Visited black medicine today for a blogging session. I started off with a chicken panino which was very big and tasted very very good. The service was very fast even though they seemed under staffed from what i could tell. After words we had cakes and coffees which were also very nice. I highly recommend the caramel shortcake. We had our blogging session in a little corner of the downstairs. The wifi was very good which is something that is quite important to me. However the one thing im not sure i liked was the rustic feel they are going for. I feel like at times it crossed from rustic to old and dingy.

I love the decor and rustic feel and the service is great. Generally too packed for my liking but was surprisingly quiet today so I stopped in to test their scones! Was just ok but if I am ever in the area again, I'd go back to try their lunch options....
Food 2 Run
Trendy Place, big day walking and seeing the city called in for a coffee and really good coffee and service...Pretty busy worth the wait....

Coffee Kings. This place is a bit too dark, a bit cramped and always too full of students spending daddy's money. However, on the plus side, the coffee is absolutely superb and the service is friendly. If you are lucky and find a window seat then it's hard to beat. At other times it's best to take your coffee and head outside with your free biscuit.

I used to come here quite often. They make good coffee, the little biscuit on the side is always a welcome treat. However I fear I an going to have to find a new coffee shop. The last few times I have been instead of receiving the cappaccino I ordered I consistently get a latte. Finally fed up, I complained and asked them to please make me a new proper cappaccino. The woman proceeded to snatch the coffee from me and simply re-foam my drink. She then poured it back into the mug. Needless to say, what I had in front of me was absolutely not what I wanted, nor what I paid for. It was appalling.

Rudest staff in Edinburgh. You will never find a group of more up themselves fuds in any coffee shop or restaurant in Edinburgh.

It's a real shame because the coffee and cakes are quite good.

The staff are so arrogant, so rude and they hate you because you're getting in the way of all the fun they're having.

The Black Medicine Coffee Co. on Nicolson Street is a mecca for students. You will often find the place filled to bursting with people working away at computers or surrounded by sheets of paper and books.

Popped in to get a quick refreshment with the OT as we were a wee bit early. Its great to see an indie open as late as this. I like the rustic feel. I usually avoid this during daytime especially in uni term term as it can get pretty busy with students and laptops. There is quite a lot of seating though. We both had ginger beer for refreshments and it was nice and quiet too!

Love this place. The atmosphere, great coffee and snacks, friendly staff, could spend hours here. Love the furniture and the coziness and will definitely make it a required stop every time I'm in Edinburgh

There was a time, around the turn of the century, when Black Medicine was cool and exciting. The coffee (Illy) was great, the food varied and delicious and the staff quirky but friendly. Something went wrong.

The coffee changed a few years ago and while some don't mind it I find it undrinkably bitter. The food selection has somewhat stagnated and, considering the changing expectations of the general public, it's rather lacking in options for those with dietary intolerances. The interior, once appealingly eccentric, has remained unchanged, perhaps unwashed. The staff, in my experience, are surly at best. [Once, having a few minutes spare I ordered a coffee to sit in but in a takeaway cup because I wouldn't be there long; argument ensued, along with a diatribe about how wasteful takeaway cups are. A few minutes later I had to ask for one anyway as I was leaving...]

And yet it keeps going and people seem to enjoy it. Clearly not everyone's cup of tea though.

Famously housed in a building JK Rowling began writing chapters for the international sensation Harry Potter, Black Medicine Coffee is a growing coffee 'empire' in Edinburgh with a great assortment of both coffee and non-coffee products. A friend of mine from uni had harassed me throughout Twitter telling me I just HAD to go. Though the JK Rowling plaque outside was an attraction, Black Medicine Coffee is a great establishment of itself. Unfortunately, I was short on time so I couldn't spend as much time as I would have wanted to enjoying their establishment. However, the atmosphere was interesting with dark, brooding elements that suit the voodoo, black magic concept well and yet makes you feel at ease with the place. The background music was not too loud like in some other cafes but loud enough to add to the whole experience. They have their menus written up on a chalkboard in order for you to see what to get, and unlike my normal orders, I order a straight, single shot of espresso for about a £1.60. The espresso was a good balance of bitter, sweet and sour with a rich aroma and full body you expect from a good espresso. Overall, I found the place to be great and would have loved to try some of the baked goods they had been showcasing in their display. Perhaps next time I'm in Edinburgh, I will sit down in this cafe and pretend to be the next JK Rowling while sipping on some delicious espresso.
