Nice to get some different flavours and options, not just the most common Mexican dishes. Good vegetarian choices. Never had goats cheese and courgette in a taco before - great idea.
Friendly staff, no rushing you through your meal.
Nice quick service.

I've been to many Mexican restaurants in Scotland and this is the best value. The menu offers hard to find corn tortillas, authentic tacos and a very flavorful skillet. The red salsa is "European" spicy but has flavor. Good service and attention. Finally, the restaurant is lively, colorful and luxuries.
I think this restaurant strikes the right balance and it gets 5 stars from me.

Massive Mexican Meals - go there - fajitas and quesadillas are the bomb and good value - waitress was Uber nice and helpful about sights in city too. Clean as a whistle - pristine toilets - large bar too and Street side seating if the weather allows

Best Fajita ever!Great lamb and super staff.

Great Mexican food super friendly staff. The size of the meals seem just right. Starters that don't over face and mains that were a good size with a good portion of rice & beans. My main was smothered in cheese and was delightful as was my partner's. The cost of our meal was very reasonable and the location on the Royal Mile was great.
A great meal to class 😁

Our favourite place for lunch in Edinburgh.
The food is always top class.
The atmosphere is great and the waitress (Myra) was superb. Nothing was too much trouble and she was attentive without being overbearing.
Just love this place and cannot recommend highly enough.
Can't wait till we get a chance to visit again.

Very good Mexican food. I was surprised it was so tasty. I did expect good Mexican food in Edinburgh, or Scotland. The staff was exceptional. Very hard working. I highly recommend this place. It's located between the middle snd lower end of the Royal Mile so it was a bit more peaceful.

Overall very pleasant experience. Service was great and food was mostly amazing. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the tortillas specifically were below the standard of the rest of the food; they were a bit dry and tasted like a store-bought brand rather than restaurant-quality.

Really good food, and affordable as well. The wait staff was great and allowed us (six dining guests) split up the bill and pay individually, and leverage different payment methods (credit card, £, etc) as well. This was nice because not a lot of place in Edinburgh allow people split bills among several transactions.

I loved this place. Probably the best Mexican food I've ever had. We just kept trying dish after dish and they were all SO good. Full of flavour but not too spicy-hot. Very friendly staff. Very reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

As we were wondering around, we spotted Pancho Villa's. After (finally) checking in to our hotel we headed back to Old Town and Pancho Villa's. As we are native Texans and nacho connoisseurs, we are always a bit skeptical. We were not disappointed! Not your usual mounds of chips and cheese, but a smaller plate with larger chips adorned with guacamole, beans and sour cream. So yummy we ordered another batch! Tastefully decorated with attentive and friendly service, don't leave Edinburgh without going to Pancho Villa's!

Oh dear.... I feel really sad about having to write this review after living and growing up in Edinburgh and having countless meals and birthday parties here over the last 20 years.

This used to be my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh but we had a disappointing dining experience last month due to one of the waiters being particularly unhelpful. I put it down to just a one off bad day but I write this on New Year's Eve after yet another encounter with the same waiter which upset me and my family so much, we all just got up and walked out after less than 5 minutes, ruining our pre booked meal on New year's Eve.

On the visit prior to this evening, we ordered a pitcher of strawberry margerita as we have done so many times over the last 20 years. The pitchers cost well over £18 pounds each so one would be entitled to expect a degree of consistency and quality ( and some tequila). What arrived at the table was a pitcher containing crushed ice, clearly made in a blender with absolutely no liquid content at all and totally undrinkable as the ice mush was so thick, it couldn't be poured, you could have stood a knife upright in the ice. On tasting the ice, it was very clear that while there was some strawberry taste, there was minimal tequila ( if any at all) in the mix. I very politely drew the above points to the waiter who proceeded to become argumentative, patronising and unhelpful. After some time the pitcher was replaced with a strawberry margarita 'on the rocks' which was fine and actually contained some tequila this time.

This evening, we turned up for our booked meal and took our seats. The same waiter came to our table and asked what we would like to drink, I replied ' a pitcher of strawberry margarita on the rocks please'. He stared at me and said they don't do pitchers of margarita on the rocks ( with ice cubes as opposed to a crushed ice mess). I replied yes you do, you did it for me last week when I complained about being served an £18 pitcher of crushed ice. The waiter replied ' well you can't have it tonight'. I was taken aback and said ' just please do the same as you did last time and what you have been doing for the last 20 years... a pitcher of strawberry margarita with ice cubes. Why could you do it last week and won't do it tonight?.. he simply replied ' because I won't'.

The atmosphere was ruined and I looked at my wife and little boy and said let's just go... which we did.

Other disappointing points of this restaurant is if you have a mid week meal, you will find that you have to get up from your table and interrupt the waiters who spend more time chatting with each other behind the bar than being attentive to the customers. If you opt for the approx £11 fajitas, don't expect more than 3 or 4 tortillas either... You'll have to ask for an extra two or three sets.. all at extra charge !!

This used to be such a good restaurant.. I don't know if it has changed hands or why the service has gone downhill so catastrophically but we certainly won't be going back.. the end of an era... so sad when a good thing breaks !!

Do NOT go here unless you wish your bill to be double what the menu says. I ordered a burrito priced at £5.95 as advertised both outside and inside on the menu which I was handed by staff. To my surprise at the end the bill was at £10.95 -- the explanation being that the advertised price was for the lunch menu. How is that my problem that I was given a lunch menu?! Why should I pay double for their mistake? Unfortunately I didn't press the issue as it was getting dark and I was in a hurry to get home. But I STRONGLY recommend that you do not go here.

One of the best Mexican food I had till date. Situated on Royal Mile, the place has beautiful colorful interiors and generous staff. We ordered Lentejas,Cheese and beans Quesuadillas and Taquitos Dorados along with ginger beer and Cranberry juice. Veg Quesuadillas were the best amongst all. Lentejas too tasted good. It was soft and had melted cheese all over. Only thing we did not like was Taquitos Dorados which were basically bland tacos but nevertheless, all in all it was a good experience. :)

Not a bad Mexican restaurant in the old town.

Their tacos al pastor are delicious!

Atmosphere is great!

The price is a little steep for the value though :/ it wouldn't hurt to add an extra taco to the plate

Margarita's and Fajita's. My favourite Mexican in the city! Combo fajita's are spicy and a favourite of mines every time I go. Margarita's are lethal and freshly made - try the strawberry!

Not as good as it used to be. There was a gap of around six years between my two visits to Pancho Villas; I last ate here in 2008. The first visits were amazing, great food and the chicken mole was incredible. Eating here more recently, I ordered the mole again, as my memories of it were that good, and was disappointed. Not as spicy - very bland, and a mole shouldn't be bland. It was OK; is all. Since then, we've discovered Viva Mexico and prefer them.

Very nice. The Enchiladas Mole Poblano (chicken enchiladas in spicy chocolate sauce) and the Tequila Sticky Toffee Pudding are especially recommended. AND, they didn't automatically add a service charge to the bill. Friendly and popular. BUT, my three courses and a beer cost £22.50. Not bad, but this is £££, not £!

In my oppinion the best mexican. Try the stuffed chillies and then sample the vegetarian options...mushroom and butterbean

I’d be happy to recommend that you give Pancho Villa’s a visit to sample their lunchtime offer as it’s high on taste and represents good value

The bottom line is if you’re visiting Edinburgh, or even if you live here, and you fancy some Mexican food, there are much better places to go than this.

If you are after some tasty Mexician food I would definitely recommend Pancho Villas.

It’s got a great menu full of lots of choices and very reasonable prices. To start definitely try the nachos; both the chilli and chicken ones are very tasty but I do prefer the chicken ones as sometimes the chilli ones can be a little spicy. The combination plate is also good to start with chilli quesadilla, chicken wings and nachos if there are a few of you as it is quite a lot to eat on your own.

For the main I would definitely recommend the chicken enchiladas which have a good ratio of chicken – cheese – salsa and the salsa doesn’t overpower it which is something I personally hate. I also would recommend the combination fajatas as it gives you a bit of variety rather than having to choose. I’ve always been intrigued by the crab enchiladas but have not gotten up the nerve to try them yet.

Another plus for Pancho Villas is that they also do student discount.

Sometimes I catch something out of the corner of my eye that takes just a little while to register with my brain’s central processor. This was the case with Pancho Villa’s £3.95 takeaway burrito lunch deal. When lunchtime came around, today, I headed in that direction to give it a try.

Situated on the Canongate, it’s not somewhere I’ve ever visited although I’m aware there have been restaurants on this site for many a year. I think it’s fair to say that the reputation of the place has been a little mixed.

The interior is packed with Mexican kitsch, with particularly garish hats bedecking the walls. It all seemed rather light-hearted and fun. Service was friendly and prompt with the counter woman efficiently taking my order, which was a beef burrito, then ensuring it was with me speedily.

Once I’d taken a photo and somehow managed to knock over one of their exterior signs, which made a noise like a gunshot as it crashed to the pavement, I was on my way, eating as I walked.

The burrito had a soft and lightly toasted exterior which encased a plentiful supply of flavourful beef with a good spice tingle and freshness from guacamole and sour cream. It was one of the best burritos I’ve sampled in the city and provided me with a really tasty lunchtime snack on the go.

So overall, I’d be happy to recommend that you give Pancho Villa’s a visit to sample their lunchtime offer as it’s high on taste and represents good value. I look forward to visiting again as I suspect their veggie burrito will be very good at addressing a hangover, next time one of those strikes me.

Scores
Blythe scores Pancho Villa’s
4/5 for food
3/5 for presentation
3.5/5 for setting
3.5/5 for service
giving an overall 14/20

I ate: beef burrito

I wore: blue and red shirt

Total bill: £3.95
