I enjoyed this pub/restaurant. Nice chill atmosphere. The food was yummy. I had the mushroom chili with cilantro lime rice and corn ribs for the first time. All around very delicious! First time visiting Edinburgh, Scotland and really enjoyed.

We can’t speak highly enough of the Merlin in Morningside! ❤️ We host a fortnightly swing dance class here and we love the venue, the staff and the food/drink. The manager Cameron goes above & beyond to make everything is perfect. We were disappointed to see the carnage left after a party last night where a group trashed the ladies loos, left cigarette butts everywhere and generally disrespected the place. Luckily the team cleared it all up for us tonight. Thank you 🙏

I go to this place quite a lot. They offer a great menu with small plates to full dinners and a decent selection of drinks. Good place to watch live sports, and a pub quiz if you fancy it.

Fantastic day at the Merlin with friends today. Service and staff are great and make you feel welcome. The manager Artur has a great attitude and his team were fantastic. Couldn’t do enough for us. We loved the Aussie guys chat, he was great value and the food was excellent. Great sunshine in the beer garden. Dana pours a good Guinness too! What more could we want. Great day overall!

this has been my local for a year now and hopefully for many more as the staff, food and atmosphere are all to high standards. This pub has everything a student could want, loads of Tvs and plenty of sport on, 20% off for students and very welcoming staff. They even supplied me a bar mat for all my barbering equipment to sit on. 10/10

Me and my partner go to the dancing classes they host upstairs. The food, the people that run the pub and the dance instructors that host the classes- are the highlight to our weekend.
The place is worth visiting for the food/service and the classes are out of this world.
Here's to many fun times ahead and more dancing to do!

Great place with lovely staff! We come every two weeks to attend dance classes in the function room and often go for drinks and food here. Staff are always great and up for a chat, prices are very reasonable and the place is clean and has a good atmosphere overall. Would be my first recommendation for eating in Morningside, and having a function.

Using the app to order was super convenient. Every food item we ordered was cooked well and tasted great. The staff was helpful and kind. The abundant outdoor seating was perfect on a sunny summer day. We are in the area every Friday, and now plan to be regulars.

Had an amazing time here! I love trying out new places to drink and have a meal - this place blew me away! The bar staff were incredibly kind, helpful and great for having a laugh with. Best night I've had in a while!

We were a party of 3 (haddock, gammon steak and macaroni). The place was not that busy for 6pm on a Saturday but tables sorely needed cleared. Service at bar (where you place you order) was extremely slow. Food, when it arrived was hot and that's the best I can say. Fish was dry while the batter was very oily chips(frozen) where not fully cooked. Gammon steak was tough while the eggs that accompanied were actually perfect again chips where hard and undercooked. Macaroni was supposed to come in a "creamy cheddar cheese sauce" but was in fact dry, lacking in sauce and the cheese was almost non existent also the "garlic" ciabatta was tasteless and cold. We shall not be returning. I suppose you get what you pay for but I did expect better.

Great food . I had the fish which was huge. Only thing I didn't like the place was a tad loud I had to shout a bit to my wife so she could hear what I was saying

A brilliant place to go for a drink and a meal. The atmosphere was lovely, the food well priced and large portioned. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Whenever we come to Edinburgh we stay at the Braid Hill hotel and have started to consider the Merlin as our local we enjoy the atmosphere when we pop in it's always for a late lunch and a nice bottle of red wine I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this pub to anyone the food is great and the service is super.

If you order the large fish and chips you will struggle to finish it, regular is big enough. Great freshly cooked food, friendly staff and good atmosphere for family meals or a few drinks at the bar.

The Merlin is a great pub in Morningside, good food that will not break the bank, allways special offers on beer and wine. £10 for a bottle off wine is good.

Haven't eaten here in a long time as not my usual haunt. There was a special on Mon-Thurs, two main meals for just under £12. I had the Classic Burger which was really tasty and my friend had the Curry complete with naan and rice. Great value for money and friendly, helpful staff
Mandy Barclay
Went in yesterday and waited nearly an hour for a bowl of soup and a cheese burger. And it came the burger was very hard
Danielle Swan Gardiner
Visited here a few times, food was Excellent and the car park facilities was great and manager extremely helpful!!

It was my first visit here but can't say I'll be back or even recommend it. Great pint of Guinness but food was awful. Considering we were charged £23 for 2 meals, it was just cheap, processed & warmed up. Veg was cold. Staff pleasant enough.
Graham Brown
Had lunch but was not great.burgers were tasteless and a very small amount of chips .not great
Alastair J Cameron

They wouldn't put the football on so I went to the ballroom in Morningside which was much better more down to earth people
Sparky Forsyth
Pleasant enough, food reasonably priced, pushing £3.85 a pint of lager would be my only grumble, but would go back again!

WENT TO THE MERLIN TODAY FOR LUNCH . TWO FEMALE MEMBERS OF STAFF WERE DEEP IN CONVERSATION AND IGNORED ME AND KEPT ME WATING TO BE SERVED ALTHOUGH THE BAR WAS NOT OVERLY BUSY. WE ORDERED FOOD AND DRINKS AND PREPAID,AS IS THEIR POLICY. TOOK OUR SEAT AND WAITED AND WAITED. WE NOTICED PEOPLE WHO HAD ARRIVED A GOOD 10-15 MINUTES AFTER US WERE BEING SEVED FOOD. A GOOD 35 MINUTES PASSED WHEN TOTALLY EXASPERATED WE QUERIED WHAT WAS GOING ON. OUR FOOD APPEARED IMMEDIATELY AND WE WERE ASSURED IT WAS HOT, IT WAS STONE COLD AND APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN WAITING IN THE KITCHEN READY FOR OUR COMPLAINT. WE DECIDED TO ASK FOR A REFUND, THIS WAS GIVEN WITH NO APOLOGY FROM THE FEMALE WHO STATED SHE WAS THE CATERING MANAGER . IT WOULD BE GOOD TO KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS TOTAL DISREGARD FOR CUSTOMERS.

Our Engagement party,<br/><br/>A perfect night for a DISASTER!<br/><br/>This is what you should write as “term and condition” of you function room booking:<br/><br/>Hard to book (*Called few time during a week, not answer, emailed them, not answer after a week, I had to show up to ask for simple “Information”)<br/><br/>Food price change as you speak with different member of staff<br/><br/>Deposit will be stolen from a member of staff (*They still didn’t give me any deposit back)<br/><br/>Bar Service, If your party starts, we will open the cash bar 45 minutes after, and you will have drink choice of 1 gin, 1 vodka, 2 expensive cognac, and 1 line of flat lager.<br/><br/>We suggest to choose our “S..t” Buffet (*The one i’m afraid i chosen, but i think was in a different name), you will have lots of poisoning food like, chicken skewers marinated for more than a week so it will be soggy when eaten, or a fantastic selection of sandwiches with sardines and salad (*I “hope” that was sardines, really sour taste for a sandwich)...lucky for you it will be some good chips.<br/><br/>You will be able to play music if you are a technician audio engineer. (*paid few people to play live but with not audio just there voices...really depressing for them and the guests)<br/><br/>You have to pay before the party, because if there is something wrong, “Tough”! (*I paid 30m before the party, they asked me to pay becausel they knew from the start they were short of 2 bar staff)<br/><br/>“Craig Henrys”, the manager, will ignore your emails of complaint and ignore the question of the deposit went to.<br/><br/>Lots more to write…<br/><br/>If you want to book a function in this place, Don’t Lose Your Money and be Embarrassed in this place!<br/><br/>

If it's a coffee, pint or food, The Merlin is a great place to relax with friends. Dined there a few times, had issues once, it was rectified immediately. The issue was only due to running out of breakfast items. Yes, you may have to wait, but hey, what's the hurry. It's a nice pub, located in a great location to watch the world go by.

Alright. The Merlin is a bit of an up and down place. Sometimes their food is really good and sometimes really bad. Their staff are friendly and if there is a complaint tend to be happy to fix it. Sometimes you can be left waiting and a little forgoten at times due to lack of staff but overall not a bad place.

This review appears in the June edition of Bite Magazine, and can be found online here. As the biggest pub in the area and with great outdoor seating, The Merlin in Morningside has always relied on a dependable local crowd. A recent visit reveals that its new owners have spruced it up a fair bit, the zany carpets of yore have been replaced by a more stylish décor of gilt-framed mirrors and a slate colour scheme. On the Tuesday evening when Graeme and I visited, the place was buzzy. Drinks-wise thereâs a variety of drafts, well-priced wines (including Prosecco for a mere £14.29) and a short, sweet selection of cocktails at £4.99. The menu was a whopper (pun intended) with pub grub staples including burgers, nachos, baked potatoes and pasta dishes. Itâs quickly apparent that the menu does âmulti-taskâ a lot; I think haggis appeared at least six times. We started with haggis nachos (£4.99); a classic example of âso crazy it might just workâ. This is just an average pub, with an average selection of drinks, with an average food menu, cooked to an average standard.<br/><br/>The bar is huge, spanning two floors, but the upper floor is used for functions only, and also an outside seating area. The list of lagers is comprehensive, but they lack real ales, and on my last five visits they have had none at all. It's not all bad, they do have Belhaven Best, Guinness and Blue Moon, so there is a good selection of lager, cider and those three to choose from as well.<br/><br/>The spirits range is quite large also, so that means that you can get a drink that you'd like, and they often have deals on for spirits or bottled beers which are worth a look. The food menu is average, but the prices are cheaper compared to some of the other Morningside bars. The mixed grill and the fish and chips that I have had were alright, but I was never going to clamber onto the rooftops and shout about them.
