It was very busy on a Friday night, but we managed to get a table for 4 without booking. The mocktail drinks (green tea and fruit) were delicious! The service was really rapid. The dumplings and bao buns were really tasty. I had the noodles with pork belly and they were flavourful. My husband had the spicy mince noodles with pig intestines and he loved it. Another one of group had the aubergines with rice which had a wonderful sauce. We also had the crispy chicken, which was a bit gelatinous and the seaweed salad which was a bit oily and too garlicky for one of our group. Overall, I liked it and would recommend a visit.

The Maocai (Hot Pot) is an absolute winner. Tasty, hot and huge. The bowl is massive and filled with wonderful flavours. The dumplings and Bao were delicious. The Aloe Vera drinks are so refreshing and tasty, especially the watermelon. Faye was an absolute star and very attentive. We highly recommend this restaurant in China Town

The skewers were really quite nice. Flavour was perfect and just enough spice and “numbness” to the spice!
I loved how every skewer tasted perfectly and it’s just one of those things that are hard to find these days.
It would have easily been a 5 star joint for the skewers alone BUT for like £7 for 5 skewers, that’s quite some healthy margin considering that makes it £1.5 for 2 fish balls or £2 for beef tribe which is almost free from western butchers!

Love this place. I work close by and usually go couple times of week.
I recommend the soups mainly the Dragon wonton or Chengdu dumplings in broth. My all time favourite is the Black fungus salad and Mixed Chengdu dumplings in spicy sauce. Simply the best in London.

I wouldn’t say it’s a cozy place, but definitely somewhere I’d go when I need a spicy & soupy meal. In general, it’s comfort food with ok price, but also noted that there are not many vegetarian options.

The spicy beef stew noodles was very nice. The food came very quickly and the staff were very helpful.
The overall mood is quite Asian. Nothing really special. It's quite cramped.

The spicy beef brisket noodle soup was sooo good and comforting- it got spicy but I enjoyed it. The fried chicken was also delicious as well. Efficient service and friendly too!

Was surprised to find really decent mala noodles at this London joint. The numbness was perfect, reminded me of the ones I had in China. The place also provides free wifi which you can log in by providing fake email details and also has toilets in store.

Simple, sometimes deceptively simple food. At first when I got Dan Dan noodles was disappointed, but when I moxed it, let flavours infuse and eaten with side greens - it was delicious. Baozi buns very big, succulent meat inside, though not as good as Shanghai street dumplings, 3 are enough for a meal.
Next time have to take aubergine - it was looking sooo tempting.

Can't deny was an f tasty lunch. £9.9 for the set. Left full and happy. Staff friendly enough and knowledgeable of the food, which was FAST. Really hit the spot. Each dish 👍 was the first person in at 12:00, left thinking this is now every day should start! Be seeing you soon.

This place is a tiny hidden gem in China Town. I have been coming for years for the cheap yet delicious steamed buns (pork or veggie). They also do lotus buns with cucumber and pork which is delicious; as well as various skewers that I am yet to try - far too addicted to the buns!

Cash only. The wontons are really good, the delicious fillings are evidently also used in the buns. This is 'the' place to come to in London if you have cravings for buns and wontons. Broth is full of MSG though.

Very good, properly spicy, Sichuan food. The peanut shrimp was truly amazing. Although the service isn't great, Baiwei still lives up to its reputation as one of the best Chinese restaurants in London.

I’m no expert, but I’d say naming your restaurant after a Maoist regime that saw the death and displacement of hundreds of thousands of innocent people doesn’t make for comfortable dining. Thankfully, ‘The Great Leap Forward’ – a dinky little Sichuan eatery located on Newport Road – is now named Baiwei (百味, which translates to ‘100 flavours’), which I think you’ll agree is far more appetising.

A small but well formed restaurant with a very authentic feeling of a Chinese restaurant. The food at Beiwei was fantastic and very reminiscent of what I encountered in the Szechuan province of China earlier this year. I would highly recommend the Dan Dan noodles!
IEATBUTTONS
The dan dan noodles with beef were exactly what we were craving - the rich sesame oil flavour and chewy noodles hit the spot but there was a real lack of spice. They were pretty average as far as dan dan noodles go, but noodles are a bit like pizza - even if they're sub-par they can still be pretty more-ish. It came in a tiny bowl so is really only meant for one - or two if you're not that hungry. Spicy green beans are one of my favourite Chinese vegetable dishes and these were a great example of how to do them right.
Into The F World
Overall, I think I will give Baiwei London another chance and order different things from the menu – probably something less obvious than beef and dan dan mien – before deciding to stick to Bar Shu or to our beloved local Sichuan Folk. Maybe it’s growing pains at Baiwei as they still try to adapt the level of spiciness to the “audience”. For the price, it is definitely an experiment worth repeating. My hero Fuchsia Dunlop cannot be wrong ;)

Baiwei specialises in “Maoist” cuisines which couple Sichuanese/Hunanese (where Mao came from) and Northern Chinese (where he held power). The Maoist theme is developed into great detail – wall paintings, memorabilia, etc. and even the cover of Baiwei’s menu greeted me with Mao’s much used propagandist phrase “Better Time”. (The original usage, I think, refers to the promised time of prosperity and abundance that the meaning of “Baiwei” suggests). And, given the dearth of good Chinese restaurants in the area, Baiwei does deliver a much better experience both in taste, service and clean but paired-down look. The menu is vast and the price range is kind. (You could get satisfactorily fed at less than £20). However, there isn’t a clear indication of how big the dishes you order will turn out to be.

I decided to have a take-away from this place a couple of months ago and didn't quite order the right things, and thus was not satisfied with the experience, but I decided to give another chance to this place, and happened to visit this place last week. I called for a Beef and Dan dan mien, which was nicely prepared and tasted great.

I have tried a few dumplings at the restaurant and was very impressed. The prices are more than reasonable. The fish and the pork dishes are a great deal for money. The place offers authentic Chinese food which is both delicious and sumptuous. Highly recommended. I shall visit again soon.

The food does all the talking here, we ordered, Duck served with vermicelli. Also ordered aubergine which was amazing as well. The dishes are flavorsome. Cash Only place!

Happen to be a Sichuan lover? Must give this place a shot. They possess a great variety and wide options of food to choose from. The pricing of the items are amazing and very pocket friendly. I recommend the chicken salad strongly. It is delectable. The staff happens to be amazing and the service offered is very efficient and quick. Everything here looks so tempting that you get confused as to what to order. We ordered a variety of dishes and they were all quite memorable and delectable. The chicken and trip were the highlights of our meal, but all the dishes were very impressive as well. The food is quite expensive so be ready to lose some money. The food and flavours, however, are worth it. Definitely recommended.

A decent Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. The food ranged from average to amazing. The chicken was strictly mediocre. The tripe was the star of our meal though. The service is efficient. The interiors are simple yet comfortable and appealing. The food can get too spicy sometimes though. They accept cash only which maybe another downside.

I recently tried this place which offers Maoist cuisine and was quite impressed with it after trying it for the first time. The ambience was great with wonderful, authentic and tribal themed decor. The was a wide range of options on the menu to choose from which was pretty interesting and innovative. I would love to visit this place again and would recommend others to try it as well.

I don't know what these guys have done with the ambience , people might like all this but I'm not a personal fan of big pictures all over the place.<br/>The prices of the dishes are cheap but the quality was not up to the mark . Service was okay enough and I think that I might come here again to give this place just one another chance.
