An amazing find off the main road in Holborn. Highly recommended and the food was excellent.
Best tasting steak I have had in a while.
Independently owned by a couple which makes it special for me.. You can feel the passion for the business and customer care.

Best steaks in London. I've been going here for nearly 17 years. Service is second to none, and the food is always amazing. If you want a good steak, excellent wine and beer selection, look no further. The Bounty burger is also amazing!

I can't rate this highly enough. That was simply the best meal out I've had in many years.
I came here from a random Google and boy I'm glad I did.
From the perfectly seasoned tomato and mozzarella salad to the unbelievably tender medium rare steak, then the generously portioned cheese board and port, this meal was exquisite from start to finish.
If only they had a better stock of bitters this place would be unbeatable. As it is I've already recommended it to several friends and I've not even finished my cheese board yet.

Wow, this place is incredible. Very unsuspecting from the outside but without a doubt the best steak I've ever had, anywhere.
I visited yesterday, with two clients for lunch and we all went for steak. I had the garlic prawns for starter which were huge, with a medium rare t-bone for mains.
Super reasonably priced, especially if you consider these guys are around £3-£5 per steak more than Miller & Carter, with a quality and experienc3 that is easily 10x better. Having dined at the likes of Gaucho's and various others, The Bountiful Cow wipes the floor with all of the competition.

Table booked for dinner after a sightseeing day in London for myself and my husband. We ordered the Cote De Boeuf special to share which was cooked to perfection. Great service, great food. Can’t comment on atmosphere as it was only us.

This place serves great steaks! There’s also outdoor seating with heaters; which is hard to find in this area. The steaks (and side dishes) are delicious and not overpriced. The staff are really friendly, giving the restaurant a great atmosphere. This place really is a hidden gem, tucked away on a quiet side street. Highly recommended.

Had the best prepared rib-eye during our London trip. The meat was tender and full of flavour. The burger was excellent as well. This place is definitely worth a visit!

Perfectly cooked steak. Super fast service. Decent seating area downstairs too. Diverse menu so there is something for everyone.

I have been twice now in a short space of time. Both times I got the sirloin a la Capricorn because it was good. Both times the steak was cooked as I had requested. Chips are nice too. No complaints

DON'T ASK FOR A STEAK.... Which for a steakhouse to not be able to source a decent bit of meat is not a good sign.
60% of the Bone in Sirloin was fat and connective tissue and generally just a chewy mess - The knives don't cut it either. 20% was bone and 20% was tasty and edible - but £25 for 3 ounces of edible meat still leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.
Stick with the burgers (where the fat and connective tissue is ground up and therefore not a problem). These are actually pretty good.

Went after seeing a talk at Freemasons Hall and had a terrific meal of Welsh Rarebit and Steak Sandwich as we were not super hungry. Love the setting and staff were super friendly.

Birthday celebration. Four of us went on a Wednesday evening to celebrate a birthday. We sat upstairs which we thought was like being in an Edward Hopper setting. The barman wasn't overly friendly or welcoming when we arrived. The steaks and burger were good. The only vegetable alternative to chips (or potatoes) was steamed spinach. When we wanted to order desserts or coffee the kitchen was closed. The waitress was stoney faced and looked very unhappy all evening. Disappointing.

Laughing cow. We sat downstairs next to the kitchen and went for the Sirloin, Caesar & Pimm's offer @ £15 which was good value, given the steak was 9oz. Food was decent - steak cooked as requested but had to rely on sauce for flavour, chips were limp, Caesar had a good honest dressing to it but croûtons were soft toast, Pimm's refreshing but miserly on the alcohol. It was all nicely relaxed; staff & chef were friendly & cheerful. As far as the steaks go, there are more flavourful slabs of the meat found elsewhere in town.

If you can get over the adulteration of the beef, and the chargrilled cooking method, and the stale bun - all big barriers to burger enjoyment - then this isn't too shabby. But I can't. No comments: Post a Comment

"The Bountiful Cow - a public house devoted to beef." Possibly the best description of a pub that I have ever encountered. This place has it all; and when I say that they have it all, I mean that they have ridiculously large burgers for a very reasonable price. So I guess that they don't really have it all, but that's okay, because they have really big burgers, and that's fine with me. The tagline ("a public house devoted to beef") pretty much sums up The Bountiful Cow's mission statement: they're a pub, a

...definitely not the best burger but I have to say The Bountiful Cow got the title of the Biggest Burger I’ve ever had

Tucked away on an unassuming street, set back from the Holborn/Chancery Lane 'strip' sits one of the most tongue in cheek pub/restaurants I've been to in London - it's The Bountiful Cow.

Price:

Baby Bountiful Burger (don't be fooled by the name, this is still 9oz beef, and includes chips) - £10.50. Extra bacon - £1.70.

Presentation:

The Baby Bountiful burger ticks a lot of boxes when it arrives in front of us. Shiny brioche bun - tick. Well proportioned beef and toppings - tick. Visible melted cheese and tongue of bacon peeking out from under the bun - tick. Bountiful portion of chips filling up the rest of the plate - tick. All is in order for a classic pub burger.

Toppings:

Mild melted cheese merges seamlessly with the beef patty, and the super thin bacon packs a punch of salt and charcoal from its char grilling. Slightly less harmonious are the chopped onions (too much of them and massively overpowering), and the inexplicable curl of iceburg lettuce (causing stability issues with everything sliding around). The whole experience is finished off with a generic 'burger sauce' which adds a creamy acidity into the mix.

Meat:

The meat in this burger is a real throwback to the 'gourmet' burgers of old - lean, ground beef mixed with herbs - I know, it sounds like something out of the twilight zone BUT* and I caveat this heavily, it actually tastes quite good.

There are three reasons for this:

1) it's freshly (and coarsely) ground so the salt hasn't had time to draw out the moisture in the beef i.e. it's juicy.

2) There is no binding agent, so the texture is unadulterated.

3) It's cooked a perfect medium-rare.

*there are, however, some cardinal sins which I find it hard to overlook. Firstly the beef is un-aged so the flavour profile is sharp and tinny - like supermarket steak - rather than the mellow beefiness of aged meat. Then there is no discernible crust formed on the outside of the patty as it's been char-grilled, this also means that where the meat has come into contact with the hot metal it is charred and acrid. So it's a bit of a mixed bag.

Bun:

On paper, and on sight, the brioche bun used for the Baby Bountiful burger looks to be the ideal wrapper for this burger, but the reality is a big fat Bun Fail. The same char-grilling which leaves the meat acrid has been deployed to toast the bun, but it's a cursory press onto the char-grill which leaves deep, burnt marks in the bun but does little to stop it pulling apart and collapsing after just a couple of bites.

Overall rating: 6/10

If you can get over the adulteration of the beef, and the chargrilled cooking method, and the stale bun - all big barriers to burger enjoyment - then this isn't too shabby. But I can't.

A neighbourhood gem, The Bountiful Cow is neatly tucked into a lane near Holborn tube station...It serves excellent comfort food, reasonably priced, with very big portions..
Their club sandwich is easily the best in London.. The huge bounty burger that they serve is a meal in itself and will keep you full all day. Try the 'outstanding' sausages with mash... juicy and delicious. End with the creme brulee or my favourite - pistachio icecream with raspberry coulis..
This is simple, hearty comfort food at its best!! The service is friendly and quick..

Loved this place.
On the outside it appears to just be a pub, however its one of the best steaks i have ever eaten. Both had fillet steak and sides. Great sauces. Great triple cooked chips,

Good reliable restaurant that does steak (in case you couldn't tell from the name) really well but without the prices of the fancier big-name steak places. This is good food at a reasonable price. The bounty burger is excellent value and a particular favourite and you really can't go too far wrong washing it all down with a side of chips and some hearty red.
